TRISO-X, LLC
is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer responsible forproviding technical capabilities to ensure TRISO-X Fuel FabricationFacility materials are processed, stored, and handled safely tominimize the potential for fires/explosions, and personnel and thepublic/environment are protected in accordance with NuclearRegulatory Commission (NRC) requirements in 10 CFR 70. This rolewill focus heavily on facility/process design and development andimplementation of safety and compliance programs and procedures fora new nuclear fuel fabrication facility, and then the role willtransition from design/licensing support through construction andstart-up/commissioning to supporting day-to-day facilityoperations.
Responsibilities:
Define the fire and life safety basis for manufacturing andsupport operations by evaluating and analyzing buildings,equipment, processes, and procedures; implement and facilitate FireProtection programs and procedures; and monitor the effectivenessof Fire Protection items relied on for safety (IROFS), limits,controls, systems, and equipment. Develop/review/revise Fire Hazard Analysis documents toidentify and evaluate potential fire hazards and exposure scenariosfor normal operations and process upsets of TRISO-X fuelfabrication processes and TRISO-X Facility operations, includingprocesses involved in storage of flammable/combustiblechemicals/gases, producing TRISO fuel forms, quality controlactivities, recycling/recovery of process materials, managingeffluents and waste materials, and conducting maintenanceactivities. Develop/review/revise compliance plans that demonstrate LifeSafety code requirements are being met. Develop/review/revise calculations by executing computer codesand models to support Fire Protection evaluations. Develop/review/revise/implement safety and compliance programsand procedures. Participate in Process Hazards Analysis activities withmultidiscipline teams to identify potential criticality,radiological, chemical, and fire/explosion hazards to support theIntegrated Safety Analysis (ISA) process. Consult with and advise operations, maintenance, andengineering personnel on the Fire Protection impacts of new orproposed changes to processes, procedures, and facilitydesigns/modifications. Participate in design reviews. Conduct surveillances, inspections, walk-downs, investigations,and audits/assessments of manufacturing and support operations, andunusual incidents to ensure compliance with approved procedures andsafety bases. Develop/revise/deliver Fire Protection training to operations,maintenance, and other personnel. Develop/revise Fire Protection postings and operator aids toimplement administrative controls to ensure they are unambiguous,easily understood, and readily achievable. Provide support to the emergency response team. Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Minimum Education/Qualifications:
Typically, ten plus years of experience in the fire protectionfield with emphasis on process fire safety for nuclearmanufacturing, or a similar highly regulated industry such aschemical manufacturing. Comprehensive understanding of fire science and fire dynamics:fire and smoke behavior, fire growth, combustion, materialproperties, and heat transfer. Experience using CFAST or other computer codes and models todefine potential fire scenarios and consequences. Working knowledge of NFPA 801 or equivalent, and experiencedeveloping Fire Hazard Analysis documents. Working knowledge of relevant fire protection codes andstandards, occupancy and hazard classifications per NFPA 101, NFPA400 and International Building Code; fire test methods; and theinterpretation of fire test data. Understanding and experienceapplying regulatory requirements, codes/standards, andguidance. Working knowledge of fire suppression, detection, and otheractive fire protection systems, including selection, design,installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance. Working knowledge of electrical classification per NFPA497. Working knowledge of evacuation movement, human response tofire cues, and egress analysis. Experience communicating technical information effectively bothorally and in writing to a wide variety of audiences, ranging fromengineering, operations, and maintenance personnel to regulatorsand management. Experience developing written procedures to implementregulatory and code/standard requirements.
