POSITION OVERVIEW

The Nylon Production Engineer provides chemical engineering expertise to deliver optimum performance of Ascend’s Nylon 66 polymerization and compounding process units in the areas of safety, capacity, yields, energy consumption, and quality. The position works under the direction of the Production Engineering Leader and works closely with professionals in Technology, Project and Process Engineering, and Manufacturing. The Nylon Production Engineer will be assigned to support an area or specific unit operations.

UNIT OPTIMIZATION

Evaluate performance using the A2E (DMAIC) process and statistical tools to make process improvements Use entitlement models to challenge and improve unit performance Develop unit production expertise, continuously building a body of technical knowledge around unit operations and processes Deliver tools and processes to enhance performance tracking and drive improvements Analyze OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) to identify opportunities and assist operations staff in developing action plans for improvement 40%

TECHNOLOGY IMPROVEMENT

Develop high-level project scopes (option and benefit analysis) for unit related improvement projects Serves as Mfg. Representative on capital project teams. Generates innovative ideas for process improvements and works with Technology, Process Engineering, and Project Engineering to screen such ideas. Provides process design information for small capital and/or expense projects. 20%

AREA SUPPORT

Monitor unit performance by tracking key process indicators (KPI’s) and key operating parameters (KOP’s) Works closely with Manufacturing Engineers, Control Engineers, and Operations to optimize the economic performance of the assigned process unit(s) by improving yields or reducing energy and other usages Works with Operations, Maintenance, and Reliability professionals to improve the reliability of the process unit(s) and to maximize OEE and provide technical support in RCA’s Actively supports the site & area safety programs via participation (or leadership) in PHA’s, FMEA’s, LOPA’s, MOC’s, incident investigations, resolution of action items, and other activities to ensure safe and reliable operation, regulatory compliance, and optimum process performance. Serves as the unit production expert and provides technical counsel and troubleshooting assistance to Mfg. Engineers and Operations as needed to deliver planned performance. Ensures systems are in place to track key process parameters, overall process performance and operating within established control limits. Works with the Manufacturing Engineers and Operations to maintain up-to-date process documentation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Education – BS or MS in Chemical Engineering 0-2 years of experience in related field 25% Travel Systems – ASPEN products, heat transfer, hydraulics, etc.

DESIRED CERTIFICATION

Green Belt or Six Sigma trained

REQUIRED SKILLS

Specific knowledge of process engineering and operations for chemical or polymer processes Strong knowledge of Process Safety Management is essential Strong technical and analytical skills with the ability to innovate and solve complex problem Knowledge and Demonstrated Application of problem solving techniques (troubleshooting) Highly motivated to achieve continual improvement Record for delivery of successful projects Able to work on multiple issues with sometimes limited lead times Willingness to provide after-hours support Excellent interpersonal skills, both oral and written with the ability to work with cross-functional teams Collaborative operating approach, across teams and functions Ability to perform in a highly dynamic work environment Judgment and confidence are essential to challenge existing operating performance and assumptions, thereby obtaining buy-in from parties affected by the work getting done.
