Position Summary:

This individual contributor’s position will identify and develop packaging solutions in support of new product launches and existing products for cost savings, sustainability and operations improvement projects (quality, efficiency, cost, etc.). Will be a key member of New Product Innovation teams and will partner with marketing and R D to develop and execute new packaging solutions. Will work closely with vendors and packaging design firms to develop and execute innovative and/or cost-effective packaging concepts for new and existing products. Duties and Responsibilities :

Works closely with R D, Marketing and others in cross-functional teams to develop, evaluate, cost, specify, and implement packaging designs for new products and product updates. Redesigns existing packaging; assists in evaluating functional aesthetics and manufacturability of new packaging; provides creative support as needed. Communicate effectively within the team, to Marketing and management on packaging design progress. Identify packaging cost savings; works with suppliers to develop and deliver models and prototypes suitable for marketing and operations packaging evaluations; makes recommendations for changes in package materials; implements agreed actions. Coordinates activities with R D and production related to primary and secondary packaging components to ensure product/package compatibility; evaluates package testing and performance in field applications; defines, develops, prepares, and submits specifications and tests protocols for packaging components. Participates as a key member on Innovation teams; determines critical dates related to packaging design, development and purchase; identifies packaging risks to meet product launch dates; maintains status information on all open packaging projects; communicates status to management on a timely basis to keep projects on schedule; establishes priorities for conflicting projects. Provides analytical and decision-making support regarding packaging issues; provides project management, data collection and analysis, problem solving, and implementation support for packaging issues; assists in identifying, and participates in the development of, packaging improvements. Develops POP displays and special sets in accordance with marketing and sales requirements; develops pallet patterns for the warehousing and shipment of finished products. Certifies combination packaging for the shipment of hazardous materials and maintains related records; assigns DOT classifications to Barr products and reviews DOT classifications for non-Barr products produced at Barr; ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Stays current in new packaging technologies and materials; evaluates new packing materials and new packaging designs; develops and maintains relationships with existing and potential packaging suppliers; works with marketing groups for SKU assignments, product mix, price verification, new pricing, etc.; may attend vendor meetings. Performs all work in accordance with Barr’s safety and quality guidelines and procedures; demonstrates clear understanding of these safety and quality objectives. Enters and Maintains Packaging Component Specifications and Packaging Bill of Materials within an ERP system. Assigns UPC, I2 of 5, carton identity and hazard labeling for products. Maintains records of Regulatory significance such as Child Resistant, DOT Compliance, ISTA 6, etc.

Qualifications/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Design/Engineering, Packaging Science, or related field and seven to ten year’s experience in flexible and rigid packaging development for consumer products with a strong retail presence is required; must have strong project management skills in coordinating cross functional activities; must have experience with new products development within consumer products; certified packaging professional a plus. Must have thorough knowledge of packaging technologies, materials, and equipment; must have thorough knowledge of industry standard testing procedures for packaging materials and packages; excellent organization, detail oriented, project management, problem solving, critical thinking and time management skills; ability to facilitate cross functional teams and processes; ability to influence teams without direct line responsibility; knowledge of pallet pattern programs (CAPE or TOPS) and DOT certification/rules a strong plus; ability to work collaboratively with people from different functional areas; excellent verbal and written communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office utilizing various software applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple projects; ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment; must be analytical, detail-oriented and accurate; proactive and creative problem solver; flexibility to travel and work necessary hours to meet all project deadlines.
