Austal USA is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Department Manager – Piping Systems to oversee the critical operations within our mechanical engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of Damage Control Systems, Auxiliary Systems, and Hotel Service Systems. You will lead a team of Engineers 1 through 4, ensuring the highest standards of performance, safety, and efficiency across these essential systems. Your expertise will be crucial in maintaining and optimizing these systems, contributing to the seamless operation of our facilities and the overall success of the organization. AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Responsible for overseeing Department Goals for a specific project as directed by the Program Engineer and Chief Department Engineer + Responsible for preparing, overseeing and assigning design calculations and drawing development to support Program Goals + Responsible for checking calculations + Responsible for progressing all department work
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE
General:
+ Minimum 8 plus years of design and/or construction experience + Excellent written and oral communication skills + Understanding of scheduling and an ability to adhere to strict deadlines + Experienced in interacting with Production, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers + Computer literate and familiar with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products + Thorough knowledge of ship and propulsion systems + Strong working knowledge of Maritime Regulatory Authorities (i.e. ABS, DNV, GL, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO, etc.) + US Citizenship Marine /
Mechanical Engineer:
+ Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree or minimum 15 years of equivalent marine design experience + Thorough knowledge of ship and propulsion system design and operation + Thorough knowledge of engine alignment and shaft design and alignment + Thorough knowledge of HVAC design + Working knowledge of FEA methods is advantageous but not a requirement. + Knowledge of composite shafting is advantageous but not a requirement.
