Lead Mechanical Engineer Location:

The Opportunity This position works out of our Princeston, NJ location in the Abbott Cardiometabolic & Informatics, Rapid Diagnostics. Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments, and informatics systems is often the first step in patient care decision-making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers. What You’ll Work On Develop company products from concept through design to volume manufacturing. Design and analyze mechanical parts for opto-mechanical point-of-care (POC) devices. Work on mechanisms and actuators; create test plans and reports. Support ongoing engineering activities and troubleshooting. Manage complex product assemblies using SolidWorks. Collaborate closely with electrical engineers to develop compact electromechanical solutions. Design and analyze microfluidic circuits and tooling; optimize mold procedures. Investigate molding and welding issues; deliver solutions for mass production. Design and implement pilot-scale manufacturing lines for early-stage product deployment. Ensure compliance with FDA regulations and medical device development quality systems. Work with engineering consultants, industrial designers, contract manufacturers, and parts vendors. Conduct engineering analysis and design validation testing using internal and external resources. Collaborate with manufacturing teams and vendors to create manufacturing and testing fixtures Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields, or equivalent years of experience in a similar area of expertise. Minimum 10 years of experience, or a combination of work and education. Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred. Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment. Capable of working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, changing environment. Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at multiple organizational levels. Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills with attention to detail. Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20%, including internationally. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree plus 8 years of experience. Experience designing and developing handheld and desktop point-of-care (POC) diagnostic devices from concept to prototype. Expertise in designing precision opto-mechanical systems with cross-functional knowledge in: Biomarker sensing Imaging systems Microfluidic systems Algorithms Proficient in rapid prototyping and hands-on fabrication, including micro-fabrication processes.

Hands-on experience in:

Tooling design Mold procedure optimization Laser or fusion welding Skilled in precision part design and injection molding for high-accuracy applications. Advanced 3D modeling and simulation capabilities for mechanical and system-level design. Strong CAD skills, preferably in SolidWorks.

Familiarity with CAE tools for:

Thermal dissipation Stress-strain analysis Impact analysis Proven ability to translate innovative concepts into functional prototypes and final products. Understanding of regulatory environments and compliance in medical device development. Knowledge of statistical tolerance analysis and optomechanical components/systems.

Experienced in scientific writing for:

Technical documentation Publications Patents Proficient in data acquisition and analysis for experimental validation. Experienced in quality control and validation using advanced metrology tools (e.g., surface profilers). Demonstrated ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
