MONDAY, APRIL 21, 2025 AT 11:59 P.M. Calibrates and operates various ultrasonic testing systems for the purpose of inspecting the electric resistance weld of steel pipe to the applicable standard. Performs general inspections on Steel Pipe products with respect to the appropriate specification. Identifies and communicates pipe manufacturing quality issues with production and quality personnel for ASP Mills. Cleans and oils ultrasonic probes.
Administers Magnetic particle tests areas indicated by the ultrasonic systems, as deemed necessary, and magnetic particle inspects the outer surface weld seam as required.
Performs visual inspection of pipe Outer Diameter, Inner Diameter, and bevels for specification conformity. Performs dimensional checks on pipe such as straightness, ovality, wall thickness, squareness, etc.
Detects all discontinuities in weld.
Determines the acceptance or rejection based on evaluation of signal response to applicable standards.
Grinds all areas with surface anomalies that are within specification.
Selects and identifies pipe for lab testing, as well as samples to be cut and broken or polished for continuing metallogarphic study of product quality. Operates Plasma torch and Hydraulic press.
Verifies pipe identity and keeps a permanent record, written or electronic, of defects and the final disposition of pipe through data entry within the Manufacturing Execution System.
Verifies NDT system calibration.
Be very familiar with the products and processes that are being used in order to explain ultrasonic inspection to customers.
Watches for deformation of pipe occurring during hydrostatic testing, as required.
Sets up, calibrates, operates, and performs minor maintenance of ultrasonic system, as required.
Performs final line inspection and preliminary mill line inspection, as required, during normal production and performs other duties, as necessitated or directed, depending on shop conditions.
Performs consistent application of procedural requirements, as it relates to acceptance of ASP products.
Rotates to different working environments and workstations as required.
Operates various ultrasonic equipment and associated equipment. Ultrasonically inspects ends of pipe to determine if lamination is present and uses digital ultrasonic thickness gage to determine thickness of pipe, as required.
Advises mill operators of suspected problems with I.D. trim removal.
Assists with the training of new ultrasonic technicians.
Uses various calibrating methods depending on customer specifications. Fabricates ultrasonic standards for calibration. Sets-up and calibrates multiple channel ultrasonic testing stations.
Uses pushbutton control panel to direct flow of pipe.
Inspects and performs dimensional checks on pipes, and reports defects and dimensions to the mill production line.
Maintains consistent communications with production and Quality Assurance personnel and supervision.
Proactively identifies and communicates observations, practices and trends which may have an impact on safety, line pipe quality, and First Pass Yields.
Operates the overhead crane for maneuvering UT standard pipe and straightening pipe cross-ups throughout processing as required
Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.
Follows all safety and job specific procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must have successfully performed the job of Quality Assurance Inspector or Lab Technician Mechanical Testing. OR Must have successfully performed a similar job as referenced above within a manufacturing environment. OR Must have a minimum of 5 years work experience within

AMERICAN

Steel Pipe or similar steel pipe manufacturing work experience.
Must be capable of completing

ASNT-TC-1A

test and requirements for Level II ultrasonic testing, Magnetic Particle testing, and Level II visual testing within 2 years of transfer to the job.

Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing are required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
Must exhibit a record of less than 4 attendance points.
Meet physical requirements for safe operation of mobile equipment as administered by Safety Department.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior ultrasonic testing experience.
College or technical school coursework in science or engineering.
Good mechanical aptitude.
Electronic skills.
Coursework in advanced High School math.
Prior work experience that required extremely close attention to detail.
Current or previously certified in Level II Magnetic Particle Inspection.
Familiar with products and processes in Quality Assurance at Steel Pipe.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS

Standing on various surfaces on various surfaces that may be uneven (dirt, gravel, asphalt, concrete, etc.) while testing and inspecting product, checking quality of product, calibrating equipment, and using measuring devices.
Walking on various surfaces that may be uneven (dirt, gravel, asphalt, concrete, etc.) from one workstation to another while inspecting product required.
Climbing stairs required to cross over conveyors and access work areas.
Stooping, kneeling, crawling, and crouching while inspecting product and required while calibrating equipment.
Overhead reach required to operate equipment, inspect product, operate grinder, check straightness of pipe, etc.
Forward reach required to use testing equipment, grinder, etc. Forward reach also required for desk activities such as computer work and keeping records.
Bended reach required to access magnetic powder, pick items up off of the floor, utilize certain equipment, etc.
Handling required for grinder, shoe, magnet, to move pipe, torch, measuring instruments, flashlight, clipboard, pipe wrench, etc.
Use of fingers essential for writing, digital phone, push buttons, turn knobs, working with connectors, data entry, measuring tape, using dial indicator, writing on pipe, on/off buttons, etc.
Feeling required to check for defects in product, to determine texture of pipe, etc.
Talking required for communication with supervisors, fellow workers, and customers.
Vision required for inspection, operating equipment, safety, accuracy, etc.
Hearing required for safety, communication, and for listening for audible alarm on testing equipment.
Lifting and carrying occasionally required to move supplies, buckets of dry magnetic powder, etc. 50 pounds maximum and 40 pounds average.
Pushing and pulling required to move equipment onto pipe.
