Job Statement
Provides technical expertise and guidance to the Engineering Department. Handles complex assignments, mentors junior staff, and ensures compliance with system specifications. Evaluates new products, recommends improvements, and acts as a subject matter expert in the field. Work will be performed with minimal oversight in an engineering lead capacity. This position provides mentoring for less experienced electrical engineers while completing comprehensive electric line design assignments. Duties will be dependent upon departmental workload and may include any or all the duties described below. This position may supervise Intern employees.
Essential Duties
Offers technical guidance to department staff, reviewing documents for accuracy and applicability. May supervise and/or direct the project work of electric system designers. May mentor less experienced engineers in all facets of electric line design.
Conducts feasibility studies, prepares design reports, cost estimates, and forecasts based on growth trends and modeling data.
Ensures plans and specifications comply with HU policies, industry standards, and codes (NEC and NESC).
Performs constructability reviews, addressing deficiencies in design or maintenance.
Reviews, updates, and prepares electric construction standards. Prepares job drawings, material lists, cost estimates, and construction labor estimates.
May prepare contracts for bidding purposes as required to secure contractors to perform work on electrical system such as line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuilds. Serves as project lead and may supervise other engineers and designers on projects of broad scope and complexity.
Stays current on industry standards and updates company specifications accordingly.
Prepares and reviews project budgets and justifications.
Additional Duties
Performs advanced engineering functions in the design and operation of electric distribution and transmission facilities. Resolves complex customer and technical issues beyond the scope of less experienced staff.
Maintains relationships with City, County, and State entities. Coordinates with other departments to address project impacts and resource needs.
Evaluates new products and trends, making recommendations for improvement.
Responds to emergency call-outs and manages restoration efforts as needed.
Assists in determining restoration actions and priorities during emergencies.
Promotes and enforces safety practices and policies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Education/Certifications/Training:

B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required.
Current Alabama Professional Engineering License or eligibility for licensure within twelve months.

Experience/Skills:

Minimum 10 years of practical experience with 12-25 kV distribution and 46-115/138/161 kV transmission systems required.
Experience with NESC compliance and modeling software is required using software like Synergi, ETAP or another software platform for analysis. Conducts system performance analyses and recommends improvements.
Expertise in design, construction standards, and codes for distribution and transmission systems.
Knowledge of materials, equipment, and system model planning.
Experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems.
Additional Requirements

Equipment:

Vehicle, computer, software (MS Office, AutoCAD, GIS, NISC, etc.), two-way radio, telephone, and calculator.

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:

Sedentary office work with occasional fieldwork in inclement weather during emergencies.

Other Requirements:

Team player with strong interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills.
Subject to recall and on-call duty.
Current Alabama driver’s license.
