POSITION OVERVIEW AND PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Position Overview:
The Stationary Engineer works at the journeyman level to operate and maintain systems which provide heating, air conditioning, steam, and hot water services. Primary/Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions): Observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters, and charts which register various aspects of boiler and chiller systems operation.
Adjusts controls to ensure safe and efficient operation and to meet demands for the service provided.
Annotates aspects of the system’s operation in log books
Identifies discrepancies for repair to ensure equipment is in good working order,
Generates service work requests and coordinating activities to perform tasks related to operating and maintaining the systems.
Start-up and shut down boilers, cooling towers chillers, and supporting equipment, to meet seasonal and customer related requirements.
Controls all chemical addition for proper level dosages in cooling towers, boilers, chillers and closed loop systems.
Performs necessary preventative maintenance on machinery and equipment, such as checking oil levels and greasing bearings.
Prepares reports and identifies problems within the systems to initiate proper corrective actions.
Work may include assignment at the Naval Hospital’s central steam and chiller/ plant or on a roving watch tending to various systems.
Operates or tends stationary chillers, boilers, and auxiliary equipment such as pumps, compressors, and air-conditioning equipment, to supply and maintain steam, chilled water, or heat for buildings, marine vessels, and/or pneumatic tools.
Test boiler water, condenser water or closed loop water quality or arrange for testing and take necessary corrective action, such as adding chemicals to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits.
Activate valves to maintain required amounts of water in boilers, cooling towers and chillers.
Monitor boiler/chiller water, chemical, and fuel levels, other than natural gas; making adjustments to maintain required levels.
Monitor and inspect equipment, computer terminals, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, safety devices, and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions and ensure that equipment is operating efficiently and safely.
Analyze problems and take appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems.
Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work.
Adjust controls and/or valves on equipment to provide power, and to regulate and set operations of system or industrial processes.
Complies with all OSHA safety regulations and adhere to proper codes and standards with a thorough understanding of safety procedures related to Electrical Systems and Lock out/Tag out Procedures.
Utilizes Safety Data Sheets to identify chemical characteristics.
Completes Work Orders daily and accurately.
Operates all equipment to ensure energy efficiency.
Work also involves other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Five years verifiable boiler operator and chiller operator or boiler and chiller mechanic/technician experience relevant to the job description.
Must demonstrate understanding of different types of controls on valves and equipment, including DDC controls. (Experience must be within the last 10 years)
A strong mechanical systems related background with a working operational and maintenance knowledge of the systems identified above is required.
Ability to read Building Documents (Blue Prints) and to read and understand technical documents
