The Transmission Technician is a skilled specialist responsible for expertly diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicle transmission systems (automatic and manual) and related drivetrain components. This role is crucial in ensuring customer vehicles’ optimal performance, safety, and reliability. The Transmission Technician performs work following dealership and factory standards, building customer loyalty by developing trust and ensuring confidence in our services. What are the day-to-day responsibilities? Performing complex vehicle transmission repair and/or maintenance work as outlined on the repair order efficiently and accurately, adhering to dealership and factory standards. Specializing in diagnosing malfunctions of automatic and manual transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials. Performing complete transmission overhauls and rebuilds, including disassembly, inspection, replacement of worn or damaged parts, and reassembly. Utilizing specialized diagnostic equipment, scan tools, and software to identify transmission issues accurately. Replacing transmission components such as torque converters, solenoids, valve bodies, clutches, gears, and seals. Conducting thorough multi-point inspections with a primary focus on the vehicle’s drivetrain, transmission, and related systems to make appropriate service recommendations. Communicate effectively with the Parts Department to ensure the availability of necessary transmission-specific components and with Service Advisors to manage production flow and provide clear updates to customers regarding transmission repairs. Documenting all work performed, diagnostic steps, and parts used for each transmission repair on the repair order. Maintaining an inventory of personal and specialized tools required for transmission work, not typically inventoried by the Service Department as “special tools.” Ensuring all transmission repairs meet stringent quality control standards before the vehicle is returned to the customer. Adhering to all safety protocols and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. How will I know if I am successful? The performance of a Transmission Technician is measured by achieving: Targeted production and efficiency in transmission repair and service. Targeted sales of transmission-related services and parts. High levels of Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) scores related to transmission work. Minimal comeback rates for transmission repairs. What are the requirements for this job? High School diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as an automotive technician with a strong, demonstrable focus and specialization in transmission diagnosis, repair, and rebuilding. Formal automotive technical training with a specialization in transmission systems; ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in A2 (Automatic Transmission/Transaxle) and/or A3 (Manual Drive Train and Axles) is highly preferred or required. In-depth knowledge of automatic and manual transmission theory, operation, and hydraulic/electronic control systems. Proficiency in using specialized transmission diagnostic tools, gauges, and equipment. Ability to read and interpret complex technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and transmission schematics. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. Good organizational and follow-up skills. Valid in-state driver’s license and an acceptable, safe driving record. Ability to lift heavy components (e.g., transmissions) with assistance or proper equipment.
