Power Systems Protection EngineerJob Description We are seeking a skilled Power Systems Protection Engineer to design and upgrade protective relaying systems from generators to switchyards. This role involves ensuring redundancy and compliance with industry standards, while performing engineering checks and calculations. The engineer will be responsible for upgrading relay systems, designing logic for protective schemes, and commissioning new systems. Responsibilities + Design engineering single lines and AC/DC elementary drawings for upgrading protective relaying systems. + Ensure complete redundancy with physical and electrical separation. + Perform engineering checks on relay settings and calculations in compliance with PRC and NPCC standards. + Upgrade electromechanical breaker failure relaying to microprocessor relays. + Design redundant breaker failure schemes interfacing with transmission operators. + Build new relay panels while maintaining existing protection systems. + Conduct engineering checks and testing on generator and GSU relay settings. + Field-commission relays and ensure PRC compliance. + Replace switchgear motor and transformer relays and calculate settings. + Complete field demolition, installation, and commissioning of relays. + Install relays on generator auxiliary switchgear for arc flash mitigation and bus transfer schemes. + Program transfer logic and develop commissioning procedures. + Support development of relay settings and calculations for generator, transformer, and auxiliary systems. + Perform field testing and commissioning of relays and associated components. + Replace static relays with advanced relays and design logic for phase reversing switches. + Bench test and logic test relays, and field commission new relays and systems. + Relocate and replace relays to new standalone panels due to hazardous materials in old panels. + Design electrical systems for new hydraulic power units for steam turbine valve actuators. + Upgrade switchgear motor relays and develop logic for breaker switching. + Upgrade relays for combined cycle units and combustion turbine units, enhancing protection. Essential Skills + Electrical engineering expertise with power systems. + Proficiency in relay settings and calculations for protection schemes. + Extensive experience with SEL, Beckwith, and GE relays. + Ability to design and review one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring diagrams. + Knowledge of protective device coordination from 480V to 500kV. + Experience with PRC evaluations and reviews. + Proficiency in ETAP/SKM or other system analysis software. + Field testing and commissioning experience. + Ability to write test and checkout procedures. + Familiarity with IEEE standards and fault analysis. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. + 5

  • 10 years of experience in power system relays.

+ Experience in specifying equipment such as protective relays, test switches, and auxiliary relays. Work Environment This role is based in the Southeast United States, preferably in Georgia, with travel required 30% of the time. The position offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities to engage in complex relay upgrades and system implementations. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $140000.00
