Mesa seeks a motivated Substation Physical Group Lead to manage a physical design team working on projects for a client with a growing workload. Position requires approximately 70% project work and 30% management. Responsibilities include monitoring budget and schedule, assigning resources to a project, communication and collaboration with the client’s project managers and project engineers, collaborating and mentoring with design team, collaborating and working with other design teams.
Lead and mentor a team to complete physical substation design projects.
Possess a thorough understanding of high voltage transmission substation outdoor equipment.
Willing to learn the Client’s standards and practices.
Ability to identify, analyze, and solve technical problems related to substation design.
Ability to work independently with direction, while not hesitating to ask questions when needed.
Possess aptitude for developing a strong working relationship with Senior Management, Program Manager, Project Manager, Group Leads, and Design Staff.
Possess aptitude for developing a strong working relationship with the Client.
Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Possess working knowledge of computers and software such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and software used for specific technical applications within the group.
Responsibilities
Establish work assignments and review performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
Establish, promote, and assure quality on all projects and work performed by the group.
Attend client joint project team, site visit, and scoping meetings for projects.
Prepare project estimates and assist in the preparation of bid packages.
Monitor project execution and schedule to ensure satisfactory performance.
Perform technical oversight and coordinate checking/review of deliverables and other project documents.
Maintain good quality and efficiency while managing a team that develops deliverables such as: General Arrangements, Equipment Plans, Elevations, Sections, Control House Layouts, Grounding analysis/design, Switchgear design, Conduit and Cable design, Creation of Bills of Material, etc., utilizing AutoCAD.
Follow up on construction issues with design staff to resolve problems and concerns in a timely manner.
Determine staffing needs to meet present and forecasted workload, help identify and evaluate potential candidates for open positions, assist with interviews and evaluation of candidates, and make hiring recommendations.
Identify training needs for staff, and budget, plan, coordinate and conduct training as required.
Conduct group meetings with team to communicate company and business unit objectives as required.
Promote a strong safety culture within the group and ensure staff incorporates safe work practices into all activities.
Approve time sheets and authorize overtime, vacation, and indirect/overhead activities.
Work with Senior Management to identify methods to improve project execution, work processes, and procedures to continually improve quality, productivity, and efficiency.
Foster strong customer relationships through communications and support.
Use good verbal and written communication skills with team members and clients.
Use good interpersonal skills to build relationships with team members and clients.
Complete assignments within budget and schedule with a high degree of accuracy to provide quality deliverables.
Mentor other designers/engineers in the group to increase knowledge of physical substation design.
Check/review other personnel work for accuracy and adherence to client/national standards.
Independently evaluate, select, and apply engineering principles and practices relevant to the project requirements. Share updates with team and leads to continually improve communications and quality.
Work with other Group Leads and the Program Manager to identify potential areas of engineering process and/or procedure improvements.
