Description

NATURE OF WORK

This classification involves installing, maintaining, and repairing the City’s natural gas distribution system. An employee in this position, depending on assignment, performs regulatory compliance field inspections; responds to emergencies; monitors gas pipeline facilities; installs new lines; locates lines; repairs leaks; maintains cathodic protection on gas lines; installs meter sets; turns on/off gas service; performs valve maintenance; and marks lines and valve street covers. This position also operates heavy equipment, requisitions supplies/parts, and maintains records. Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs installation, maintenance, and operation tasks involved with CNG compressors, fill stations, and vehicles.
Performs tasks related to the installation and maintenance of customer meter sets and regulators for residential and commercial service applications; performs atmospheric corrosion inspection and remediation on meter sets above ground gas piping. Plans, assigns, directs, and supervises the work of the assigned employee(s) engaged in the installation of gas distribution and/or gas service equipment.
Assists in planning preventive and corrective measures for protection of pipelines; monitors the cathodic protection of the distribution system; and replaces corroded risers.
Inspects gas pipelines and enclosed areas to detect and locate leaks; performs annual leak survey using leak detection instruments; and maintains required records.
Handles the installation of new gas services and appliances and conversion of gas equipment.
Oversees (depending on assignment) the activities of work crews and provides technical direction; participates in jobs involving unusual or difficult technical problems.
Installs new gas lines; purges gas lines; locates gas lines; and maintains valves.
Completes documentation on work and maintenance.
Installs gas line and valve street markers.
Requisitions needed materials, equipment, and supplies.
Responds to gas emergency calls.
Performs related work as required. Requirements

EDUCATION

Graduation from an accredited high school/vocational school or possession of G.E.D. equivalency or an equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined below or acceptable combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Reasonable years of work experience in gas utility work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas pipeline facilities, appliances, and gas piping.
Complete the City of Sunrise Operator Qualification Program, as related to the position, within the applicable probationary period.
Certifications desired depending on assignment: Certificate of Competency as a Gas Installer (or equivalent depending on assignment).
Pass pre-employment and random drug testing, as required and monitored by federal, state, and local authorities.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire

Work Environment
Work is performed in various environments including in the field with prolonged exposure to the elements, natural gas and electrical equipment. Shifts and work hours may vary and may include evenings, weekends and holidays. Some duties may require exposure to adverse conditions including but not limited to varying temperature; inclement weather and/or other adverse environmental conditions. Knowledge of use and operation of instruments such as gas scope, odor tester, voltmeters, amp meters, and other instruments used in the gas industry.
Knowledge of natural gas distribution systems.
Knowledge of the location and size of valves, meters, and regulators in the gas system.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the department.
Knowledge of approved methods, materials, and tools used in gas piping, installation, and maintenance work.
Knowledge of the method of determining necessary pipe size to supply any number of appliances on customer’s premises, whether it be residential, commercial, or industrial.
Skill in the detection, determination, and elimination of gas leaks.
Skill in using department software.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
Ability to provide an environment conducive to acceptable performance and high morale.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and construction plans.
Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
Ability to drive and operate department vehicles and equipment.
