! About the
Role:
McLain is looking for an experienced Survey Party Chief to support our growing site work and underground utility operations. This role is essential to ensuring accurate layout and staking for grading, storm, sewer, water, and curb installation. You will lead the field survey operations alongside a dedicated Rodman and must be confident in operating Trimble GPS and Total Station systems .
Responsibilities:
Provide precise layout and staking for all phases of site development, underground utilities (water, sewer, storm), grading, and curb work . Read and interpret civil site and utility plans, cut sheets, and design drawings. Operate Trimble GPS, Total Station, and Data Collectors for layout and as-built surveys. Lead and coordinate with your Rodman and site crews to ensure layout matches project specifications. Communicate effectively with project managers, superintendents, and field personnel to ensure staking needs are met. Perform field calculations as needed and troubleshoot design or layout discrepancies. Maintain all survey equipment and ensure proper calibration and care. Follow all safety procedures and company policies while working on active construction sites.
Requirements:
Minimum 5 years of field surveying experience specific to site work and underground utility projects. Must have strong, hands-on experience with Trimble GPS systems and equipment . Ability to read and interpret civil site plans, profiles, and details. Capable of managing a Rodman and coordinating daily field tasks independently. Solid understanding of site grading, pipe installations, and curb layout. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Must be able to work outdoors in varying site and weather conditions.
Preferred:
8+ years of total survey experience in heavy civil/site development. Familiarity with Trimble Business Center or similar software for office-to-field transfers.
