Full-Time Job Summary:
The Party Chief is responsible for independently conducting land surveys and layout work in support of commercial construction site development projects, often operating as a one-person crew and occasionally with an assistant. This role ensures the precise collection of field data and layout necessary for site preparation, grading, utility installation, and building construction. The Party Chief collaborates with project managers, engineers, and construction teams to ensure all survey work aligns with project plans and specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform construction staking, boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and as-built surveys using robotic total stations, GPS, and data collectors. Interpret and implement survey data, site plans, blueprints, and construction documents. Communicate with engineers, project managers, and site superintendents to ensure survey work supports construction schedules and standards. Perform quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and integrity of survey data. Maintain and manage survey equipment, ensuring it is properly calibrated and in working order. Record and compile field notes, sketches, and reports for office processing and project documentation. Ensure field safety procedures are followed and contribute to a culture of jobsite safety.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree or technical training in surveying or geomatics is preferred. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in surveying, with at least 1-2 years in a Party Chief or crew lead role. Proficient with modern survey instruments and software, including GPS systems (Trimble, or similar), robotic total stations, and data collectors. Strong understanding of construction documents and the ability to translate them into accurate field layout. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other CAD software is a plus. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of local survey standards, construction codes, and permitting processes. Experience with commercial site development (e.g., grading, utilities, roadway layout). Ability to mentor junior crew members and foster a productive work environment.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on construction sites. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Work in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
