PURPOSE:

Under the direct supervision of the Party Chief, this position is responsible for assisting the Party Chief with daily operations including; Boundary, Topographic and As-built Surveys; and Construction Layout. Competence with optical and digital instruments as well as handheld controllers and Data Collectors is required. Employees in this position are expected to safeguard and maintain precision equipment and work vehicles as well as insuring that needed supplies are available.

JOB DUTIES

Collect information needed to carry out new surveys, using source maps, previous survey data, photographs, computer records, and other relevant information. Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction, using engineering plans. Conduct surveys to ascertain the locations of natural features and man-made structures on the Earth’s surface, underground, and underwater, using electronic distance-measuring equipment and other surveying instruments. Direct and supervise work of subordinate members of surveying parties. Lay out grids, and determine horizontal and vertical controls. Maintain equipment and vehicles used by surveying crews. Perform calculations to determine earth curvature corrections, atmospheric impacts on measurements, traverse closures and adjustments, azimuths, level runs, and placement of markers. Perform manual labor, such as cutting brush for lines, carrying stakes, rebar, and other heavy items, and stacking rods. Place and hold measuring tapes when electronic distance-measuring equipment is not used. Position and hold the vertical rods, or targets, that theodolite operators use for sighting to measure angles, distances, and elevations. Provide assistance in the development of methods and procedures for conducting field surveys. Record survey measurements and descriptive data, using notes, drawings, sketches, and inked tracings. Search for section corners, property irons, and survey points. Set out and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation. Compare survey computations with applicable standards to determine adequacy of data. Prepare topographic and contour maps of land surveyed, including site features and other relevant information, such as charts, drawings, and survey notes. Run rods for benches and cross-section elevations. Operate and manage land-information computer systems, performing tasks such as storing data, making inquiries, and producing plots and reports.

KNOWLEDGE

Minimum knowledge of land surveying practices and techniques. Working knowledge of modern survey devices and modern survey methods. Work requires using a machete, shovel and sledgehammer or other appropriate tools. Requires the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with project managers, subordinate, related personnel and limited contact with the general public.

EXPERIENCE

Some previous survey experience is required.

Exercise judgment to comply with instructions or prescribed routines, methods or practices involved in the making of minor decisions within the limitations of standard methods and procedures.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Heavy physical effort is required. While performing the duties of this position, the Employee is regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the facility and job site. The employee is required to walk; have the full use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance. Verbal and written communication is required, as well as the ability to hear. Must be capable of lifting and transporting up to 40 lbs. for a period of up to 30 minutes at a time and incrementally throughout the day, position equipment as directed and drive stakes and other marking material (using a mallet or sledgehammer) for construction purposes. Must have the ability to ascend/descend slopes, traverse difficult terrain, climb fencing, cross creeks or creek beds. Must have the ability to walk and stand for extended periods. Must have the ability to measure, handle supplies, pull manhole covers with hook, operate tools such as machete and bush-hook to clear underbrush and use a shovel.

MENTAL AND/ OR VISUAL DEMAND

Continuous mental and visual attention required to avoid hazards and mistakes.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR EQUIPMENT

Responsible for preventing damage to tools and equipment being used to perform and complete task assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Disagreeable working conditions with continuous exposure to dust, dirt, seasonal temperature variances, wet cement, with several elements continuously present to the extent of being objectionable. HAZARDS Injuries should they occur, would result in partial incapacitation due to cuts and sprains.
