About the Position
- Direct and oversee statewide highway maintenance programs, policies, and procedures in alignment with MDOT’s strategic goals.
- Supervise a team of technical staffers involved in planning, design, and implementation of maintenance operations.
- Allocate and manage human, financial, and equipment resources effectively to optimize maintenance outcomes.
- Review and evaluate maintenance program performance; prepare reports and recommend improvements or corrective actions.
- Coordinate with District Engineers, Bureau Directors, and other MDOT divisions to ensure consistency and integration of maintenance strategies across all districts.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in maintenance engineering; provide technical guidance and support for field operations, asset management systems, and engineering innovations.
- Act as project manager for high-priority maintenance projects and initiatives when designated.
- Represent the Maintenance Division in meetings with other government agencies, contractors, and the public.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, engineering standards, and environmental requirements related to highway maintenance.
The Deputy State Maintenance Engineer assists the State Maintenance Engineer in providing strategic leadership and oversight of statewide highway maintenance operations within the Mississippi Department of Transportation. This role involves planning, coordinating, and managing maintenance engineering programs and initiatives to ensure safe and efficient roadway conditions across the state. The incumbent will supervise and direct a team of engineering technicians, providing guidance on maintenance engineering standards, methodologies, and practices. This position reports directly to the State Maintenance Engineer and functions as a senior technical and operational advisor on statewide maintenance programs, including pavement preservation, roadway safety improvements, roadside management, outdoor advertising, maintenance permits, and emergency response operations. What you’ll need to be Successful This position aligns with the Transportation Engineering Team Lead job classification and requires high-level technical, supervisory, and administrative competencies in maintenance engineering.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in the use of engineering software, project management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline, Licensure and 6-7 years of experience as an Engineer.
Agency preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineering (PE) Licensure required.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience as a professional engineer, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or administrative role.
- Experience in transportation maintenance engineering, asset management, or infrastructure operations preferred.
