Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. “Internal Posting-Only temporary or permanent NCDOT Employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 May Apply” This is an Engineering Supervisor III position that involves general administrative responsibilities and specialized professional supervision in highway engineering. Serves as the District Engineer for Mecklenburg County. Will manage and coordinate construction and contract administration within the District. Directly supervises engineers, technicians and clerical staff and provides technical assistance on engineering problems. Supervises development of secondary road programs and preparation of plans for Division projects. Directs the review of plans for subdivisions and various types of permits and encroachments. Responds to inquiries from the public and local officials. Coordinates with local municipalities on zoning review cases. Acts as point of contact for municipalities and public. This position is located in the Mecklenburg County District 2 Office. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews
Experience in contract administration for Division and locally-managed projects (federal and state funded) in accordance with established state and federal policies, procedures and guidelines, including thorough knowledge of NC DOT and FHWA Policies, Procedures and guidelines, as well as established practices and principles of Transportation Engineering
Experience in the supervision, direction, management and training of subordinate employees to achieve established project delivery metrics
Customer service experience with internal and external customers including Division personnel and management, Municipal and County governments, consultants and contractors, elected officials and the general public including explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
Experience in reviewing project plans and specifications for locally-managed projects, subdivisions, right of way encroachments and driveway permit applications for compliance with all applicable design and safety standards

Additional Expectations:

Preference will be given to registered Professional Engineers. Employee will traverse uneven and difficult terrain. Must operate motor vehicle safety in all kinds of weather, including snow and ice. A successful applicant should possess skills in effective communication in written and verbal form and in establishing and maintaining positive working relationships. Necessary Special Qualification:

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
