- Posting is for an Engineer II position that will serve as the Deputy Division Traffic Engineer located in the Carthage Division Traffic Services Office.
The position is responsible for coordinating the operations of the Division’s Traffic Engineering Signals Group and will lead subordinate employees to apply traffic engineering principles in the operation and maintenance of the traffic signals in Division Eight. Work involves performing traffic engineering investigations, evaluation of coordinated signal timing and recommending adjustment, seeking funds for safety and operational improvements, and assisting with the development of traffic signal contracts as well as post-let technical support. Position functions as a project manager for signal related construction projects, conducts traffic investigations as assigned, and serves as the Incident Management Engineer for Division 8. This position requires the ability to communicate verbally and in written form with citizens, government officials, employees, and other NCDOT customers. Must have the ability to use a laptop computer and various computer applications. Work may require emergency situations, special events, and working in inclement weather conditions. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge of the principles and practices of Traffic Engineering, The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and NCDOT Signal Specifications and Geometric Design
Knowledge of NC General Statutes and Administrative Code
Experience in operation and timing of Traffic Signals, including signal timing software
Experience in tracking operation cost expenditures
Customer service and communication experience with the general public, local government officials, and NCDOT employees, including public meetings and field reviews
Additional Expectations:
Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required. Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
