Description of Work Salary Grade – NC16
Municipal and School Transportation Assistance (MSTA) Section has responsibilities of providing traffic engineering analysis and transportation operations expertise to North Carolina municipalities, statewide public schools, private schools, colleges, and other Department of Transportation Units and State Officials. MSTA is responsible for continued development and maintenance of the MSTA School Traffic Calculator, an analysis tool developed by this section and adopted by the State to assist engineers, architects and developers with school campus and state roadway network designs. The primary objective is to help identify and solve all forms of transportation related concerns involving: cars, buses, trucks, trains, pedestrians, and bicycles. Typically, solving problems involves performing comprehensive transportation studies to better assist with school safety. These studies vary in duration and complicity, but all provide proposals that complement and improve the quality and effectiveness of the existing transportation system and traffic operations with the ultimate result of helping make our transportation network safer, move people and goods more efficiently, and help make our infrastructure last longer while keeping public concerns in mind
This is an entry level position located in the Traffic Management Unit, located at 750 N. Greenfield Parkway, Garner 27529. This position reports to the Traffic Management Unit Engineer and will work primarily in the Municipal and School Transportation section. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Experience preparing and/or reviewing technical memos and reports.
Knowledge of traffic analysis tools, techniques, and/or software.
Knowledge of the standards, policies and procedures of NCDOT.
Experience developing, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
Demonstrated ability using computers and business software
Experience using Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel.
Additional Expectations:
Management prefers applicants with working experience of specific traffic software packages, including: Synchro, TransModeler, SIDRA, HCS, and VISSIM. Applicants with experience using traffic engineering concepts from specific manuals and guides such as
HCM, ITE
Trip Generation Manual, FHWA Roundabout Guide, FHWA RCUT Guide, FHWA DDI Guide, AASHTO Design, and MUTCD are preferred. Applicants with experience in working with consultants, including reviewing technical work and/or scoping contracts are also preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed for this position.
