This position prepares a confidential construction cost estimate for NCDOT Central Highway Lettings and Alternative Delivery Projects to be used by the Department as a basis for qualifying bids received from private contractors. The estimating process is completed by reviewing construction plans, specifically Roadway and Transportation Management plans, to identify specific areas of interest and then using external references to calculate a production based estimated price or finding similar historical project costs. There are several resources available to aid in generating estimates such as historical price databases, historical contractor production databases, and reference manuals. Estimating experience (cost, man-day, etc.) will provide potential candidates an advantage, but estimating is really a combination of reading plans to understand what work is desired and either applying a certain crew for a set duration or finding historical prices from projects that are similar in nature. “
