This position supports our medical professional liability line of business, and preference is for this position to be hybrid. The Senior Accountant will be primarily responsible for general ledger accounts including complex transactions and reconciliations. The position will work with their supervisor to gain understanding of impact to financial statements of assigned accounts and journal entries. The Senior Accountant will understand and perform internal controls in compliance with established policies and procedures and maintain an understanding of GAAP and STAT that is applicable to assigned area(s). What you’ll do: 90% –

GAAP and STAT Accounting and Reporting:

Responsible for all assigned general ledger accounts including complex transactions, reconciliations, and account maintenance. Prepares journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation. Can make subjective judgments independently for routine tasks as well as new tasks or assigned projects; involves management in complex or sensitive judgments. Being able to understand new accounting guidance and, with assistance, grasps the implications thereof. Demonstrates ability to effectively review the work of others. Able to understand and analyze data. Able to understand ProAssurance operations and financial relationships and understands common insurance industry metrics. Able to understand all business metrics disclosed in assigned work areas as well as the objectives of assigned areas. Understands General Ledger database structure and suggests changes to simplify workflows. Can extract/report General Ledger data for assigned area(s) and write complex financial reports. Able to interpret impact to financial statements of any account or journal entry in assigned area, identify trends, and perform complex analysis of data. Able to present findings to groups and speak intelligibly about complex accounting issues. Prepares or assists with preparation of a variety of financial reports or portions of financial reports on assigned basis of accounting or audience (GAAP, STAT, management). Works with other departments on the preparation of a variety of financial reports and components of statutory filings. 10% – Secondary Duties Able to understand general ledger software. Can effectively use software applications for assigned work or special projects. Demonstrates ability to learn new software features or applications. Able to utilize research software to complete department research projects. Able to present findings to groups and speak intelligibly about complex accounting issues. Participates in the execution of special projects as directed. Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions. What we’re looking for: B.S. degree (accounting or finance) from an accredited institution required, with a GPA indicative of high financial accounting proficiency. CPA or advanced degree preferred. Minimum of three years related accounting experience required; five years of experience preferred. Advanced skills in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word required. Experience with database General Ledger software preferred. Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Insurance experience preferred. Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to work independently. Position Salary Range $74,713.00 – $123,289.00 The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range.
