Overview:
The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records through general ledger updates, month-end closings, and budget preparation. This role supports grant billing, reconciliations, and internal financial reporting while ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in accounting, at least three years of nonprofit accounting experience, and proficiency with Sage and Microsoft Excel. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments are essential for success in this position.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain and update the general ledger, including all necessary transactions for month-end and year-end financial statement reporting and budget preparation.
Responsible for month-end closing process, including bank and benefits reconciliation.
Manage accounts receivable valuation and cash collections.
Assist in the grant billing process.
Analyze monthly general ledger account activity, journal entries, accruals, and reconcile balance sheet accounts, fixed assets, and employee benefits accounting.
Calculate allocations and assign appropriate amounts into grants’ general ledger accounts.
Assist with budget requisitions for grant purposes.
Handle in-kind transactions and reporting throughout the year. Maintain budgets in the accounting system.
Provide internal reports as requested by management.
Summarize and prepare financial status and transaction reports, including profit and loss statements and other necessary reports.
Assist in the year-end audit and prepare respective audit schedules.
Assist in the preparation of yearly reports for insurance carriers and ad hoc reporting for grants and budgeting purposes.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Controller.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) with a major in Accounting or Business Management
- Required.
At least 3 to 5 years of relevant accounting experience - Required.
3 years of general ledger and account reconciliation experience - Required.
3 years of nonprofit accounting experience - Required.
2 years of experience with Sage Accounting - Required.
Working knowledge of nonprofit grant accounting - Preferred.
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
Experience with automated accounting software and payroll systems.
Required knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other finance/accounting-related applications.
