Job Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller oversees the accounting and financial reporting functions of the college. The position is responsible to develop and maintain proper accounting processes, systems, controls, and related documentation.

Essential Functions:

Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission and values, and contributes to the development of the Accounting Department. Practice superior customer service. Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned. Display respect and civility to all constituencies in all communications. Attend work timely and on a regular basis during the established hours of operation; work additional hours as business necessitates. Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission and values, and contributes to the development of the Accounting Department. Responsible for all financial accounting and general ledger management. Ensure and document that internal controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance that college assets are protected. Ensure the accounting function is run in an efficient and effective manner that staff are properly trained, and processes are continually evaluated and updated as needed. Responsible for Grant, Development, Endowment, and Investment Accounting. Ensure college financial records are prepared and maintained in compliance with college policies and generally accepted accounting principles. Responsible for preparing monthly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure compliance. Ensure the administrative software operates as required and participates in validating and designing any suggested changes. Coordinate all information needed for annual audits of the college’s financial statements, A-133 audits, and 403(b) audits. Prepares all related financial statements and documentation. Understand GAAP and related accounting standards, and GAAS. Responsible for 990 preparation and general tax compliance. Responsible for working collaboratively across departments to ensure goals of college are met while maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations. Participate on institutional committees.

Chief Financial Officer Required Core Competencies and Professional Experience:

Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision making skills. Knowledge and understanding of the mission, goals, organization, and financial structure of a private college or non-profit. Previous experience that would complement the listed essential functions of the position. Proficiency for using a variety of computer and technology-related software and equipment, including Microsoft Office products and database systems. Proficiency in using web-based technologies, including database systems. Ability to work independently and in a team environment, with or without direct supervision. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, managerial skills, and an ability to work with a variety of constituencies. Experience as a controller or similar work-related experience.

Preferred Core Competencies and Professional Experience:

Experience in higher education preferred, but not required. CPA Certification preferred. Five years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
