Payroll Technician

QUALIFICATIONS
Four years experience performing bookkeeping or other accounting work. Degree in related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of payroll operations, practices, and procedures. Working knowledge of payroll and various policies, rules and regulations on deductions. Strong computer skills a must. Ability to plan and organize work and establish priorities, based on guidelines and work cycles in the payroll function. Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing and solving payroll problems. Ability to be creative and innovative in applying policies and procedures to specific payroll situations. Ability to organize, prioritize, and establish and meet deadlines for various reports, projects, and required activities. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as the initial point of payroll data input for employee information including absences, deductions, leave taken and any other adjustments to pay. Prepares turn-around payroll documents for all personnel. Enters all payroll changes in data concerning employees into the computer. As payroll information is turned in, verifies substitutes and their rates of pay; processes absences for a variety of reasons and codes appropriately; handles special processes for bus drivers, cafeteria and Prime-Time workers. Balances payroll information. Answers a variety of questions from employees, school secretaries, principals, and the general public on paycheck deductions, “how to” questions, misunderstanding of paychecks, changes on paychecks, and other issues. Researches wage information for verification of employment forms, shows transfer of funds of State Department of Public Instruction, and others. Processes special payrolls for supplements, twelve-month optional pay, summer school, and bonus pay. Maintains payroll totals and prepares various reports for retirement, social security, federal and state taxes, and unemployment. Distributes payroll printouts and checks appropriately. Voids checks as necessary. Processes stop payments requests and reissue checks that are lost or never received. Processes W-2’s and other end-of-year payroll information. Provides assistance to the Associate Superintendent for Business Operations and the Accounting Manager as requested and serves as backup to other staff in the finance office. Serve on various school system committees as requested. Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
: Must have finger dexterity and be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Must possess the visual acuity to work with data and figures, operate a computer and other office equipment, perform accounting/bookkeeping functions, and maintain accurate records. Must be able to perform medium lifting exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
