Job Description

Overview:
JOB SUMMARY

The General Accountant is responsible for managing key general accounting processes to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting in alignment with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies. This role focuses on core accounting activities such as prepaid expense management, intercompany reconciliations, sales tax filings, high-volume transactional reconciliations, and account balancing. The General Accountant works closely with the Accounting Manager and Controller to support the monthly close process, maintain compliance, and prepare for audits. This is a hands-on accounting role that contributes to the financial integrity and operational effectiveness of the Accounting team.

Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
General Accounting Operations:

Own the prepaid expense process, including booking, maintaining schedules, and balancing monthly entries; proactively drive resolution of outstanding items such as vendor credits, renewals, and open-ended balances to ensure timely and accurate amortizationPrepare and process intercompany reconciliations and settlements, including generating intercompany invoices with appropriate supporting documentation (e.g., receipts as needed), and coordinating payment with internal stakeholders to ensure timely settlement.

File sales and use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with filing deadlines and applicable tax regulations; collaborate with internal stakeholders to support ongoing sales tax compliance and coordinate with the Accounting Manager when new state tax registrations are required.

Perform account reconciliations for high-volume transaction vendor accounts.

Prepare comprehensive journal entries with complete and accurate supporting documentation, ensuring entries are well-documented, properly classified, and in compliance with accounting policies and audit requirements.

Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, including reconciliations, adjusting entries, and supporting schedules.

Support the preparation of audit schedules and documentation for internal and external audits.

Participate in continuous improvement of accounting processes and internal controls.

Work closely with the Accounting Manager in preparing financial reports for internal purposes, the parent company, and/or auditors.

Assist the Accounting Manager with suggesting changes to policies and/or procedures to improve financial reporting methods or outcomes.

Backup and dual control for journal entries and other misc. approvals.

Engage in cross-training and knowledge sharing with fellow finance team members to foster collaboration, increase team versatility, and maintain strong coverage for key processes.

Assist with month/quarter/year end tasks that include, but are not limited to:

AccrualsReconciliationsDeferred revenueReportingFinancial statementsData analysisAdjusting journal entriesConsolidationEliminationsIntercompanyInterface with various staff and departments to solve problems and answer questions.

Cash Receipts and Bank Deposits:

Serve as a backup for deposits and cash receipts.

Financial Audits:

Participate in assembling financial data for internal and external audits.

Ensure all documentation is organized and readily available for auditors.

Confidentiality & Ad Hoc Duties:

Protect the organization’s value by maintaining strict confidentiality of financial information.

Assist the Controller in performing special projects related to finance and accounting.

Acts responsibly and ethically when working with sensitive financial information, whether it is information for the company or for individuals.

Complies with local, state, and federal financial regulations, as well as the regulations established by the company itself.

Perform other duties as assigned to support the finance team and company operations.

Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration strongly preferred.5+ years of accounting experience with demonstrated expertise in reconciliations, intercompany accounting, and general ledger maintenance.

Experience filing sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.

Experience working with enterprise ERP systems; NetSuite strongly preferred.

Solid understanding of prepaid accounting, intercompany, and transaction volume management.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Strong knowledge of the MS Office suite.

Thorough understanding of GAAP, accounting, and finding/fixing discrepancies.

A comprehensive understanding of journal entries.

Experience in a professional services or project-based environment is preferred.

Experience with government contracting is a plus.

Valid driver’s license and insurance.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The majority of work for this role is performed in a home office and/or professional office and interacts with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. Telecommuters are expected to have sufficient home office space that appears neat, organized, and professional when on video meetings.
