Location New York City (on-site) Position Summary We are seeking a Senior Accountant to lead our monthly close process and ensure the accurate and timely delivery of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial results in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This individual will serve as a trusted and detail-oriented accounting professional with strong operational expertise. The ideal candidate will proactively improve and scale accounting processes to support our growing organization. The role will collaborate closely with departments across the organization to ensure financial data is accurate, complete, and aligned with organizational activities. In addition, the Senior Accountant will play a key role in strengthening our internal control environment and developing, enhancing, and implementing sound accounting policies and procedures.
Primary Responsibilities:
Financial Accounting & Month-End Close + Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts; ensure all balances trace to trial balance. + Prepare and post month-end journal entries with appropriate documentation. + Review and record payroll activity, including accruals as needed. + Prepare depreciation schedules; coordinate with IT and Office Services for asset write-offs. + Support monthly financial statement preparation, including departmental and program-level P&Ls. + Manage recurring entries and month-end close tasks in the accounting system. + Maintain organized records of all journal entries, bank statements, and supporting documentation. Revenue, Receipts and Reconciliations + Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and resolve outstanding items. + Reconcile credit card transactions (e.g. Square, Authorize.net) with internal records and bank deposits. + Allocate credit card fees and revenue to appropriate accounts. + Record and reconcile event revenue and deferred revenue accurately. Internal Reporting & Staff Support + Respond to ad hoc reporting requests and provide accounting support to staff. + Collaborate with the VP and SVP of Accounting to distribute monthly budget reports to department heads. + Assist in compiling data for internal planning and forecasting. Audit & Tax Support + Provide documentation and support for internal and external audits. + Assist in the preparation of tax filings including Form 990 and 990-T schedules. Financial Reporting + Prepare the initial draft of the monthly cash flow analysis report for completion by Finance/Accounting leadership. General & Compliance + Stay informed on changes in GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. + Liaise with internal teams to ensure accurate and timely financial operations. + Serve as backup for processing disbursements and coding payment requests, as needed. Qualifications + Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business or equivalent degree and/or experience + 3-5 years of relevant accounting experience + Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit practices + Nonprofit or association accounting experience a plus. + Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. SAGE / Intacct and Excel + Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. + Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset Salary and Total Rewards Package Starting pay range: $80,000 to $90,000 based on relevant experience and qualifications.
