Job Description
SCU is a large credit union with a customer service focus. We offer loans, deposit accounts and investment opportunities to our members, as well as other services. Our headquarters are located centrally in the heart of Columbia, SC, and we have 19 branches from which we serve members throughout our state.
SCU is currently seeking a Senior Accountant to assist with month-end close, regulatory reporting, account reconciliations and special projects. This is a highly visible position within SCU with the opportunity for exposure to all aspects of the credit union.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures proper and timely recording of financial transactions in the general ledger in accordance with GAAP
- Responsible for the monthly general ledger close process including preparation of journal entries, monthly accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations in the areas of responsibility
- Responsible for assigned areas of quarterly regulatory reporting
- Prepares schedules, supporting documents, and variance analyses for management
- Responsible for the integrity and accuracy of the related calculations and processes
- Perform account reconciliations and other accounting analyses to support effective financial reporting
- Prepare documents for the annual audit
- Take part in/lead various initiatives that involve multi-competence cross functional collaboration, such as financial reporting setup for new products, process improvement initiatives or system conversions that result in reconciliation process changes, etc
- Review and record invoices from vendors to ensure accuracy in billing and support the payment process
- Participate in quarterly Asset Liability Management meetings by preparing information as assigned
- Responsible for ad hoc reporting and performing special projects upon request.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- 5-7 years of relevant accounting experience (financial institution experience not required)
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Advanced knowledge of accounting functions and processes
- Ability to extract, verify, and compile accounting information from multiple sources to complete work assignments
- Advanced ability to effectively present complex accounting and finance related information verbally and in writing
- Advanced experience with financial systems required. Must have hands-on experience with accounting and software packages
- Experience and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Must have strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Attention to detail is a must
- Must be able to work well with others or alone, under minimal supervision
- Advanced Excel experience required
- Must have ability to relate and communicate effectively with others
- Thorough understanding of accounting and finance principles and procedures
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills
- Proven ability to prioritize
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
