About the Agency
The Mississippi Public Utilities Staff (“MPUS” or “Staff”) is an Executive Agency tasked with representing the broad interests of the State of Mississippi by balancing the respective concerns of the residential, commercial or industrial ratepayers, and the state and its agencies and departments, and the public utilities. The Staff serves three main functions: 1) advise the Public Service Commission in writing as to the broad public interest of the State of Mississippi, the using and consuming public, and the public utilities in all major rate cases and automatic adjustment clauses; 2) review and investigate the justness and reasonableness, to both the public and the public utility, of rates charged or proposed to be charged by any public utility; and 3) accumulate evidence and other information from public utilities and other sources as required by the Public Service Commission. About the Position
This is a professional utility audit work, accountable for conducting audits of all sizes and types of utilities. An accounting degree is not required but preferred, and the candidate will be required to do regulatory accounting reviews. Analyzes financial records, rate structure reports, and data gathered by utility companies. Reviews and prepares case materials required in regulatory proceedings. Evaluates procedures and techniques of utility companies for regulatory related matters. Assists other divisions in preparing reports and analysis; collaborates with outside entities to keep abreast of trends and practices. Employees at this level may serve as lead auditor on portions of audits or complete audits.
What you’ll need to be Successful
Ability to perform accounting and/or expense reviews and/or audit experience, and willingness and capacity to learn new concepts.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-5 years of experience.
Agency preferred qualifications:
An accounting degree is not required but preferred, and the candidate will be required to do regulatory accounting reviews. Audit experience is preferred.
