Description of Work The Program Coordinator I – New Admissions Sentence Auditor positions are located in the Combined Records section of the Department of Adult Correction (Raleigh, Wake County.) The primary purpose of the New Admissions Sentence Auditor position is to audit all new and/or re-admission records. This entails verifying accuracy of all Judgments and Commitments, as well as ensuring proper signatures and certifications from the Court, Judges, and Clerks to ensure authenticity of each Judgment and Commitment received from the Court. This position must perform legal research as to apply appropriate sentencing law for each new and/or readmission offender’s record as indicated on Judgment and Commitments received from the Clerk of Court. The Combined Records section is responsible for the development and maintenance of offender records and the calculation of sentences for all offenders who are incarcerated in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction facilities. The staff at Combined Records obtain information from a variety of sources, including the courts, the Post-Release Supervision/Parole Commission, the North Carolina Department of Justice, the Attorney General’s Office, and federal, state, and county law enforcement agencies. The section also provides auxiliary services to the Post-Release Supervision/Parole Commission, Community Supervision, and the Extradition Office. This position must enter all sentence structure data per the Judgment and Commitment into the OPUS system precisely to ensure the offender’s release date is accurate. This position is responsible for keeping abreast of all NC General Statutes pertaining to all criminal offenses, as well as all DAC and DOP (Division of Prisons) policy and procedures, Rules and Regulations to ensure the offender is receiving proper gain, earn, merit and penalty time is applied properly. This position must have the ability to apply and interpret the statute to ensure proper arrangement of all sentence structure information in OPUS. Note:
To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following: Considerable knowledge to interpret and apply the North Carolina General Statutes and NCDAC policies/procedures, including the offender’s sentence structure per the Judgment and Commitments of the Court. Experience to discern priority cases and handle them according to DAC policy/procedures, along with computing the offender’s time computation, ensuring all DAC policies pertaining to offender’s sentence reduction credits and/or penalty time is applied per DAC rules and regulations using OPUS (Offender Population Unified System).
Demonstrated ability to communicate in clear and effective oral and written form concerning all DAC, DOP, DCC and Parole Commission rules and regulations and/or policies, procedures that pertain to the offenders’ sentences. Management Preferences (preferred, but not required): Ability to understand and be able to apply the applicable sentencing laws per all criminal offenses as on the Judgment and Commitment.
