The Assurance Manager is responsible for supervising, directingand reviewing the results through the delegation of tasksthroughout the planning, field work and “wrap-up” stages of anAudit client engagement. In this role, the Assurance Manager ischarged with marketing, networking and business development withinan area of expertise, as well as the responsibility of ensuringengagement profitability involving billings and collections.
Traditionally responsibilities of the Assurance Manager willinclude advising the client on various economic and regulatoryrisks within their industry, resolving complex accounting issues,apply GAAP and GAAS consistently within complex situations, writingtechnical consultation memos on
GAAP / GAAS
issues, anddocumenting, validating, testing and assessing various financialreporting control systems.
Job Duties:
Control Environment:
Appliesknowledge and understanding of the collective effect of variousfactors on establishing or enhancing effectiveness, or mitigatingthe risks, of specific policies and procedures Applies a broadunderstanding of objectives and components of the overall controlenvironment and organization, and supervisory controls Validatesand assesses effectiveness of internal control over financialreporting Identifies and communicates to management and auditcommittee suggestions to improve client internal controls andaccounting procedures Identify and delegates functions of the auditto the auditor in charge as deemed appropriate Supervise the workof audit team and review workpapers and conclusions preferablyonsite during audit field work Provide on-the-job-training to theengagement staff during audit field work
GAAP:
Applies knowledgeand understanding of governing principles; applying theseprinciples to client transactions; and documenting andcommunicating an understanding and application of these principlesIdentifies and consults with clients on the impact of newaccounting pronouncements Monitors and communicates importantprofessional, industry pronouncements Presents and discussesalternative generally accepted accounting principles and argumentsfor/against such alternatives Drafts complex financial statementsand related footnote disclosures and effectively communicates theseto client Identifies complex accounting issues and forms anddocuments resolution, seeking counsel of BDO technical experts asneeded
SEC and PCAOB:
Applies knowledge and understanding of SECregulations and PCAOB guidelines, and documents and communicatesthe application of these principles Reviews SEC filings, includingMD&A, financial statements and disclosures for appropriatenessin form, content, completeness, and accuracy, and ensures thatquarterly reviews are properly performed Reviews requiredcommunications to the client and Audit Committee, ensuring theircompleteness, accuracy and compliance with Firm and professionalguidelines Reviews Section 404 internal control audit work allnecessary checklists to ensure their completeness and compliancewith Firm and professional guidelines Ensures compliance withengagement independence requirements and consults internally asneeded
GAAS:
Applies knowledge and understanding of professionalstandards; application of the principles contained in professionalstandards; and the ability to document and communicate anunderstanding and application of professional standards on anengagement Applies a thorough knowledge of professionalstandards/practices, including GAAS and PCAOB in performing andsupervising work Provides guidance to others and affirmsconclusions made by others Communicates matters required to bereported to the Audit Committee/Board and those charged withgovernance Applies the use of efficiency tools such as statisticalsampling, CAATS, etc.
Methodology:
Applies knowledge andapplication of BDO standards that guide effective and efficientdelivery of quality services and products Conducts detailed reviewto assure audit is completed in accordance with assurance manualstandards Prepares or reviews required communications to managementand audit committees, ensuring timeliness and completenessRecommends appropriate outcomes to critical issues Initiates andprepares client acceptance/retention procedures where appropriatePlans the audit process and oversees the execution of procedureswith quality, efficiency, and completeness despite pressures ofdeadlines Executes proper BDO methodology including but not limitedto proper archiving procedures Considers Sarbanes-Oxley rules inunderstanding and executing service plans for combined 404 andfinancial statement audits for public clients
Research:
Appliesmethodology used to seek or maintain information from authoritativesources and to draw conclusions regarding a target issue based onthat information Defines methodology to conduct research projectsand completes in a timely manner Applies comprehensive knowledge ofall appropriate research tools and draws conclusions based uponappropriate research Prepares memo supporting research/conclusionsand consults with others if appropriate Presents issues to RTD orconcurring reviewer effectively and accurately Other duties asrequired
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Responsible for supervisionof Associates and Senior Associates on all projects Review workprepared by Associates and Senior Associates and provide reviewcomments Act as a Career Advisor to Associates and SeniorAssociates Schedule and manage workload of Associates and SeniorAssociates Provide verbal and written performance feedback toAssociates and Senior Associates Teach/coach Seniors and Associatesto provide on the job learning
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skillsand Abilities:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree, required; major inAccounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferred Master’sdegree in Accountancy, preferred
Experience:
Five (5) or more yearsof prior relevant audit experience and/or public accounting,private industry accounting or consulting/professional servicesexperience, required Prior significant supervisory experience,required Industry expertise in one or more assurance specialty,preferred
License/Certifications:
Active licensed US CPA,recognized active International Equivalent or unique qualificationas defined by BDO’s Assurance Licensing Policy, required If activeinternational equivalent or unique qualifications, required toobtain an active US CPA license within approved timeframe asdefined by firm licensing requirement guidelines
Software:
Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, preferred Experiencewith assurance applications and research tools, preferred
