Primary Function:
The Church Financial Manager is responsible for managing the financial records and transactions of the church. This role includes overseeing offerings, donations, and other income, processing accounts payable and receivable, maintaining accurate financial records, and assisting the church leadership with financial reporting. The Financial Accounts Manager must be a person of integrity, confidentiality, and proficiency in accounting and financial management.
Working Relationships:
The Financial Manager reports to the Associate Pastor while working in collaboration with the ministerial team and support team at Immanuel Baptist Church.
Professional Responsibilities:
Managing Contributions :
Recording and tracking tithes, donations, and other contributions made by church members. This often includes issuing contribution statements to donors for tax purposes.
Maintaining Financial Records :
Keeping accurate and up-to-date records of all income and expenses. This might involve tracking checks, cash deposits, and other forms of payment, as well as managing the church’s general ledger.
Budgeting and Financial Planning :
Assisting in the development of the church’s budget by tracking current spending and projecting future expenses. The financial manager shall work with church leadership to allocate resources appropriately.
Disbursement of Funds :
Ensuring bills are paid on time, such as utility bills, staff salaries, and any other operational expenses. The financial Accounts Manager often helps manage the flow of money, ensuring that church obligations are met. Reporting to
Church Leadership :
Providing financial reports and updates to the church’s governing body or finance committee, typically on a monthly or quarterly basis. These reports provide transparency and accountability regarding the church’s finances.
Human Resources:
Onboarding new employees, managing the church’s employee insurance and retirement for each employee and processing paperwork for employees leaving.
Payroll :
Managing payroll, including calculating wages, issuing paychecks, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.
Tax Compliance :
Ensuring that the church complies with tax regulations, which can involve filing necessary documents, such as year-end reports and tax forms for staff and donors.
Confidentiality and Security:
Maintain confidentiality of all financial records and donor information. Implement and maintain secure processes for handling cash, checks, and other financial assets.
Other Duties:
Assist with financial planning and strategic initiatives as requested by the church leadership. Attend regular staff meetings and provide financial updates to the leadership team. Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with accounting practices and church financial needs.
Qualifications/Education:
(Knowledge, Skills, & Education) Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or related field. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience:
2+ years of experience in financial record keeping, accounting, or bookkeeping, preferably in a nonprofit or church setting. Familiarity with accounting software (QuickBooks, Church Management Software, MicroSoft Office Suite, online payroll systems, etc.) is required.
Skills and Abilities:
Detail oriented and strong organization skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. High level of integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality. Familiarity with IRS regulations related to churches and nonprofit organizations. Work is to be performed in a standard office environment within the church.
