Church Bookkeeper First Congregational Church of Milford 4 Congress Street, Milford, MA 01757 About the Organization First Congregational Church Milford founded in 1741, is part of the United Church of Christ denomination and is an active part of the Milford, MA community. While the congregation is smaller, our church serves as a home for Spanish-, Brazilian Portuguese- and Quechua-speaking congregations, Alcoholics Anonymous, Girl Scout troops and more. About the Position First Congregational Church Milford is seeking a part-time Church Bookkeeper to manage ongoing bookkeeping and accounting support. The Church Bookkeeper is responsible for managing all financial transactions of a parish, including recording income from donations and other sources, tracking expenses, maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports for the Treasurer and Governing Board, and ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures, all while upholding the confidentiality of sensitive financial information. The exact schedule is flexible, will be decided together with the Treasurer, and will need to be organized around the Church Administrator’s schedule (part-time) as the same desk and computer are used. The position is overseen by the Governing Board, with day-to-day supervision by and reporting to the Treasurer. The Church Bookkeeper will also coordinate closely with the Administrator, Pastor, Head of the Governing Board, Collector, and Property Management Committee. The position is paid hourly with no benefits or paid leave time. This position is for 6 to 8 hours a week in-person. Key responsibilities

Financial Recording :
  • Accurately record all income and expenses in the Church’s accounting system (QuickBooks), including cash receipts, checks, credit card transactions, and electronic transfers and totals of Congregational giving as provided by the Collector.
  • Monitor and reconcile bank statements regularly.
  • Process accounts payable, including vendor invoices and payments.
  • Prepare and print checks, submit to Treasurer for signature, and prepare for mailing.
  • Balance checking account and investment accounts and submit reconciliation to treasurer for signature.
  • Keep confidential all financial and contribution information.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Treasurer and Collector.
Budgeting and Reporting:
  • Assist in developing and managing the church budget.
  • Generate monthly financial reports for the Treasurer and Governing Board and quarterly reports for ministry teams and the Congregation. Assist with the preparation of the annual financial report in January for the Church’s annual meeting. Create other ad hoc reports as required.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends and potential issues.
  • Maintain organized financial records and filing systems.
Payroll Processing:
  • Manage payroll for Church staff, including calculating deductions and taxes.
  • To prepare monthly, quarterly and yearly payroll tax forms and make necessary deposits, and prepare W-2s at year-end.
  • File necessary payroll tax returns
Compliance and Auditing:
  • Adhere to all accounting policies, guidelines, and internal controls.
  • Collaborate with auditors to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Provide recommendations on ways to improve bookkeeping and financial reporting systems.
  • Ensure the financial records are backed up on the computer and cloud.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Minimum of an associate’s degree in accounting from an accredited educational institution and 2 years of experience OR a minimum of 5 years of experience as a bookkeeper
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal
  • Positive attitude, friendly, and have a sense of humor when it comes to unexpected events
  • Fluent or Proficient English
