Accounting Tech/Specialist Working Title General Accounting Specialist Competency Level Advanced Home Department Controller – 35100 Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The General Accounting department reports to the Associate Controller of Operations in the Controller’s Office. The Controller’s Office comes under the leadership of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance in the Business Affairs Division. The AVC for Finance provides financial, accounting, and management reporting support services to the University. It is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, supervising, and administering all accounting and financial reporting functions related to the operation of UNCW and the integration of the budget and procurement system into the official financial records of the University. The Controller’s Office provides accounting and management reporting support services to the University. It is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, supervising, and administering all accounting and financial reporting functions related to the operation of UNCW and the integration of the budget and procurement system into the official financial records of the University. The Controller’s function is responsible for the consolidation and maintenance of University financial records in order to provide accurate and complete financial data to University management and State and Federal agencies. Location of Workplace Main UNCW Campus Brief Summary of Work for this Position The General Accounting Specialist works in a dynamic and fast-paced department, handling daily banking deadlines and high-volume processing. This position ensures that all general ledger activities are processed promptly and accurately, including cash management, journal entries, domestic and international wire transfers, chart of accounts maintenance, petty cash review, bank reconciliations, and monthly and annual closing activities. With a strong emphasis on precise, detail-oriented work, the role requires clear and concise communication across campus, troubleshooting issues, and performing system-wide reconciliations on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. Additionally, this position assists with Finance Training classes and maintains the departmental website. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Preferred education, professional skills and experience Four-year degree in Accounting or Business Administration. Knowledge of general accounting procedures in a Higher Ed environment. Experience with Banner Finance and proficient use of Excel. Ability to perform financial analyses as well as interpretation of financial data and reports. 3 years of experience working in Accounting Operations, in a fast-paced environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent organization and time-management skills. Required Certifications or licensure
