Position Summary Information Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field. CPA or CFA certification preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in financial management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
In-depth knowledge of finance, budgeting, and investment management.
Familiarity with emerging issues, trends, relevant regulations andpliance requirements in highercation.
Demonstrated understanding ofplex research budget portfoliosposed of state funds, extramural funding from sponsored grants and contracts, facilities and administration costs, and licensing fees.
The ability andmitment to safeguard all fiscal, human, technological and physical assets with ethical practices, strong internal controls, and corrective action to address audit findings.
The ability andmitment to build and maintain collaborative and consultative partnerships acrossanizational units and divisions.

The Chief Financial Officer will have the opportunity to engage in impactful work that will play a pivotal role in the growth and innovation that takes place at Appalachian State University. Appalachian State University is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead our financial operations. The CFO will be responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the university, ensuring financial health and stability, and supporting the institution’s mission and goals. ing to the CFO are the Office of Budget Management, Controller, and Procurement Services. This role requires an individual with vision and high integrity who possesses a strong background in finance, strategic planning, and financial management. ing directly to the Chancellor, the Chief Financial Officer oversees the financial/budget functions of the university. This person serves as a vitally important senior member of the administration and is expected to provide proactive, strategic advice to the Chancellor regarding the achievement of the mission of the University through sophisticated and forward-thinking financial and administrative policies and prores. The position will also lead the University’s capital financing and debt management strategy. The ability to successfully represent and consult with the Board of Trustees, the UNC System Office, and the Board of Governors is a crucialponent of the success of the position. This responsibility includes overseeing/ensuring the preparation of financial statements in accordance with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and the ability to provide additional accurate analytical, financial, and accounting information that will allow the Chancellor and members of the administration to make informed decisions and select appropriate courses of action.

Key Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy:

Develop, implement, and lead multi-year financial modeling, scenario planning, and forecasting to anticipate future risks and opportunities that support the university’s long-term goals and objectives.

Budget Management:

Oversee the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of the university’s budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
Financial ing: Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to the Board of Trustees and other stakeholders.

Risk Management:

Identify and manage financial risks, ensuringpliance with all relevant regulations and policies.

Leadership:

Provide leadership and direction to the budget and finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Collaboration:

Work closely with the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellors, and other senior leaders to align financial strategies with academic and operational priorities.

Stakeholder Engagement:

Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including donors, government agencies, and financial institutions, to support the university’s financial health. Type of Position Full Time Position
