Job Description
The Chief Financial Officer will be a strategic advisor and business partner to the Chief Executive Officer, the Treasurer and other members of the executive leadership team. The ideal candidate must be self-directed, able to work in a team environment and an eager communicator. They will lead and mentor a team to align long-term and short-term financial strategy; provide precise financial data and insightful analyses; ensure reporting, policies and procedures are tailored to the needs of the diverse agency; and ensure overall fiscal rigor, sustainability, and alignment. Goals of Position
Work closely with the Executive Leadership Team on all matters related to the agency
Work with Chief Executive Officer, Treasurer, board members, finance team, finance/audit committees, and advisors to set and monitor financial goals, plans and capacity for the various departments and stakeholders as they relate to mission and annual agency goals
Develop and implement financial strategies and procedures necessary to enhance agency efficiency, positively influence staff retention, and allow for agency growth as necessary
Assist in building a highly inclusive team with members who thrive, especially when organizational outcomes are met
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities
Timely preparation of accurate financial statements, budgets, as well as internal and external reporting.
Partner closely with the CEO, Board Finance and Audit Committees; act as the primary financial interface with the full Board.
Participate in annual and long-term resource allocation planning with CEO
Create, manage, review and analyze various monthly and quarterly financial statements.
Monitor liquidity needs.
Ensure that outside audits are scheduled timely and any resulting findings addressed.
Partner with financial and legal consultants to ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements and to ensure that big picture goals are communicated and implemented effectively.
Maintain professional relationships with external auditors, bankers, insurance agents, and grantors.
Refine and continually develop efficient and effective systems and processes.
Streamline/simplify financial statements and reports.
Manage and mentor the finance team, instilling a strong team dynamic and taking ownership for the professional development of colleagues.
Proactively collaborate across the agency.
Leadership Team Responsibilities
Participate as a member of the Executive Leadership Team to provide a united, visible, and strong leadership presence across the organization.
Provide consistent and transparent updates to CEO on the organizational financial health
Actively problem solve and prioritize overall effectiveness of meeting stakeholders’ needs
Assist in maintaining culture of wellness, philanthropy, and respect Help to develop, implement, and record/measure outcomes for strategic plan and goals
Other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Experience
Deep expertise in financial control, analysis, budgeting and reporting
Experience with philanthropy including private operating foundations, private foundations, public charities, and donor advised funds. Further experience with disqualified persons, prohibited transactions and activities, and all related accounting and legal requirements
Prior experience working with a Board of Directors and committees
Substantial experience working with Quickbooks Enterprise/Nonprofit/Pro
Advanced MS Excel skills
Professional qualifications to include a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and 7 years of related experience, or a master’s degree (MBA desirable) and/or CPA designation with 5 years of related experience.
Ideal professional experience includes: previous financial work in a medium sized nonprofit in a supervisory role.
