Job Description

Veterans’ Services Counselor 3.7 3.7 out of 5 stars Fort Walton Beach, FL JOB Assists Veterans and their dependents with claims within the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs or other Federal, State, or County agencies to secure benefits they may be entitled to under such laws/statutes.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Interviews, counsels, and assist Veterans and their dependents in applying for compensation, disability claims, pensions, death benefits, hospitalization, outpatient treatment, insurance and education benefits. Answers inquiries regarding the interpretation of laws, regulations concerning Veterans’ benefits. Refers Veterans and their dependents to other Federal, State and local agencies services sought or needed are beyond the cognizance of laws and regulations governing Veterans benefits. Provides field visits to incapacitated, eligible applicants to initiate or follow-up on claims. Inputs data such as the claimants’ personal information, military service, dependents’ personal identification and other pertinent information. Verifies data regarding income levels, financial status, assets/debts, insurance coverage, dependency and other information required to prepare/process Veteran’s benefit claims. Performs clerical support tasks; schedules appointments, completes applications and forms. Provides briefings or presentations to community and civic organizations in the absence of the supervisor, or when directed. Receives and reviews amendments and/or policy changes periodically to Title 10/38 USC, 38 CFR, and other VA program guides and regulations. Provides supervision and oversight of temporary office assistants employed under the Work-Study program. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Physical Requirements:

Must be able to operate office machines, to include computers, copy/fax machines, and any related peripherals. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or negligible amount constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This position does require prolonged periods of sitting stationary in one position. Physical demands are essentially those of sedentary work.

Language Ability:

Requires ability to read and understand a variety of legislative materials, procedures, manuals, professional journals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports and correspondence with proper format, punctuation, diction, spelling and grammar. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence:

Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written or diagrammatic form; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables; to apply principles of influence systems in staff supervision; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Numerical Aptitude:

Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; calculate decimals and percentages; interpret graphs.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with conflicts or tight deadlines. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
