PREA Compliance Specialist Orleans Parish Sheriff’ 2800 Perdido Street, New Orleans, LA 70119 SUMMARY The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody, control and rehabilitation of inmates. The PREA Compliance Specialist (PCS) plays a critical role in ensuring the facility adheres to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. The PCS monitors policy implementation, staff training, inmate education, and facility compliance efforts to promote a safe, respectful environment free of sexual abuse and harassment. This position requires a high level of integrity, discretion, and attention to detail. SALARY The salary compensation for the PREA Compliance Specialist (PCS) is commensurate with the selected applicant’s skills, knowledge, and expertise. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Job Duties & Functions:
Ensure facility policies, procedures, and post orders align with PREA standards and are effectively implemented. Maintain confidentiality in all PREA-related matters unless disclosure is necessary to protect safety. Conduct regular rounds to check for tom or missing PREA posters and ensure immediate replacement. Monitor the availability and visibility of PREA-related information via posters, tablets, handbooks, and written materials. Review and confirm that educational resources are accessible to all inmates, including those who are non-English speaking or who have disabilities. Observe and assess intake procedures to verify inmates receive proper orientation on the agency’s zero-tolerance policy and reporting mechanisms. Oversee PREA risk screenings at least quarterly and provide feedback to improve the accuracy and consistency of classification decisions. Ensure compliance with agency policy regarding screening, classification, and housing decisions related to PREA risk. Monitor camera positioning and mirror angles to reduce blind spots and increase safety. Collect and review documentation from unannounced rounds monthly. Check daily for any reports of sexual abuse or harassment submitted through internal reporting options. Ensure inmates have confidential access to external reporting resources, including mail handling consistent with legal mail protections. Assist in monitoring and documenting efforts to prevent retaliation against victims, witnesses, and reporters for at least 90 days. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of PREA standards, OPSO policies, and agency training materials.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree preferred. Minimum 1 year of experience in a correctional, legal, or compliance role. Knowledge of the Prison Rape Elimination Act and its implementation standards. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and act with discretion. Proficiency with basic computer systems and documentation tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience conducting investigations, audits, or compliance checks. Fluency in multiple languages. Experience working with individuals with disabilities or limited English proficiency.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to conduct facility rounds and walk long distances. May be required to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to work in a correctional environment with potential exposure to stress or conflict.
