Business and Financial Services The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is seeking a highly qualified, professional, and experienced candidate to serve as Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting will be responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of the department, management of UAH Foundation accounts, and various accounting, and financial reporting functions. This incumbent will ensure that accurate financial records are maintained and in compliance with applicable GASB and FASB standards. Other responsibilities include preparing financial statements, assisting and coordinating of annual and periodic audits, and providing financial analysis and reporting to support decision-making by UAH leadership. The Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting will also play a critical role in safeguarding UAH’s financial integrity, promoting transparency, and supporting the institution’s overall financial health and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Direct the day-to-day operations of UAH and UAH Foundation accounting and financial reporting functions including monthly and year-end closings ensuring accuracy, compliance, and transparency in all financial matters.
Assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard university assets and maintain financial integrity.
Assist with the coordination of annual and periodic audits and liaise with external auditors, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders on matters related to accounting and financial reporting.
Manage the preparation and analysis of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, in accordance with GAAP and other applicable regulations.
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and professional development opportunities to foster an inclusive and high-performing team.
Collaborate and partner with campus academic and administrative staff to continually improve accounting processes and reporting.
Generate routine and ad-hoc reports for various purposes and audiences including but not limited to credit rating agencies, federal and state entities, management, and other campus stakeholders.
Attend meetings and represent UAH and/or the Accounting and Financial Reporting Department on committees.
Stay current on accounting standards, regulations, and best practices in higher education finance, and ensure university compliance with all relevant requirements.
Participate in special projects as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited institution
Significant experience (5 or more years) in accounting and financial reporting roles, preferably in a higher education or public sector environment
Thorough knowledge of GASB and FASB accounting standards applicable to universities and non-profit organizations
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and communicate insights effectively to diverse audiences
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
CPA license strongly desired
Advanced computer skills with MS Office particularly Excel
