POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Director of Accounting reports to the Associate Vice President/Controller for the Division of Finance, Administration, and Business Innovation. The Director of Accounting is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the University’s general ledger for the preparation of financial reports. The Director will coordinate account activities for all divisions and partner with budget administration/unit managers to deliver consultative services and solutions (i.e. audit etc.) regarding their accounts. Performs grant authorization functions for all grant records, reporting procedures, and closing accounts; coordinates with the Title III and/or Sponsored Program Director, program directors/coordinators for budgeting purposes, and grant-related matters. Works with student accounts, Financial Aid, and Registrar’s offices for reconciliation of student enrollment and financial aid awards reconciliations; payroll, account payables, and purchasing offices.
EDUCATION
Master’s degree in accounting, management, finance, or business administration Five years of progressively responsible financial experience, preferably in an institution of higher education. Strong background in accounting. Experience interpreting and applying federal, state, and institutional fiscal policies, regulations, and reporting requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
: Experience in assessment, strategic planning, program development, and innovation. Experience evaluating and making improvements in internal controls. Strong skills and team-building experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint High level of moral character and integrity. Ability to maintain effective working relationships in a highly regulated and compliance-driven environment. Knowledge and understanding to ensure compliance with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Education, and other agencies. Knowledge of fund accounting in an educational environment. Familiar with the IRS code as it relates to tax compliance and reporting. Ability to coordinate projects. Skills required to implement continuous quality improvement techniques. Ability to think progressively and collaboratively with the University’s stakeholders. RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the expenditure cycle, including purchasing, accounts payable, and payroll. Prepare asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information. Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly. Assists with the coordination and preparation of the budget process cycle. Conducts and assists with other inventory checks throughout the campus. Documents financial transactions by entering account information. Recommends financial actions by analyzing account options. Summarizes current financial status by collecting information; and preparing balance sheets, statements of activities, cash flow statements, and other reports. Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents. Assist with annual audits. Maintains financial security by following internal controls. Prepares payments by verifying documentation and requesting disbursements. Answers accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policies and regulations. Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements and advising management on needed actions. Prepares special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends. Maintains customer confidence and protects operations by keeping financial information confidential. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Must be able to interact with others and provide excellent customer service.
