Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Manager of Accounting to oversee accounting efforts for our clients, with a focus on commercial real estate and operating companies. This role will manage financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and team leadership, report to CPAs, and ensure accuracy and strategic insight for a complex portfolio. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in real estate accounting and operational business finance, with an aptitude and desire to learn and use new tools and software solutions, while collaborating with leadership and external stakeholders. This position will be remote to begin until offices in Lexington, SC are ready with a projected 90-120 days. Hybird schedule once training is complete.
Responsibilities Financial Oversight:
Direct all accounting functions for commercial real estate assets (e.g., office buildings, retail centers, industrial properties) and operating companies, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and cash flow management. Oversee property-level accounting, such as tracking rental income, operating expenses, and capital expenditures.
Reporting & Analysis:
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP, tailored to real estate and operating company needs. Provide detailed financial analysis (e.g., NOI, EBITDA, ROI) to support asset management and business strategy. Deliver consolidated reports to senior leadership, investors, and lenders.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
Lead the development of annual budgets and forecasts for properties and operating entities, aligning with ownership goals. Monitor variances and recommend corrective actions to optimize financial performance.
Compliance & Audit:
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including South Carolina tax laws and real estate reporting requirements. Manage internal and external audits, coordinating with CPA firms to maintain clean financial records. Oversee lease accounting compliance (e.g., ASC 842) and property tax filings.
Team Leadership:
Supervise and mentor a team of accountants, fostering a high-performing and collaborative environment. Streamline processes and implement best practices for efficiency and accuracy.
Operating Company Finance:
Manage financial operations for operating companies, including revenue recognition, cost accounting, and intercompany transactions. Support business units with financial insights for operational decisions (e.g., expansion, cost reduction).
Systems & Technology:
Oversee the use of accounting software (e.g., Yardi, QuickBooks, SAP) and ERP systems tailored to real estate and business operations. Drive process automation and system upgrades to enhance reporting capabilities. Work with leadership to enhance internal software solutions for accounting and property management efforts.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
Partner with asset managers, property managers, and executives to align financial strategies with portfolio objectives. Liaise with banks, investors, and legal teams on financing, refinancing, or equity transactions.
Qualifications Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation strongly preferred, MBA a plus.
Experience:
7-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role focused on commercial real estate and/or operating companies.
Technical Skills:
Expertise in GAAP and real estate accounting standards (e.g., lease accounting, depreciation schedules). Proficiency in financial software (e.g., Yardi, MRI, QuickBooks) and advanced Excel skills. Experience with ERP systems and financial modeling tools. Ability to work in and learn new tools and software solutions as needed.
Industry Knowledge:
Deep understanding of commercial real estate financials (e.g., CAM reconciliations, capex budgeting). Deep understanding of business and partnership accounting. Familiarity with South Carolina’s real estate and business tax environment is an advantage.
Soft Skills:
Strong leadership and team management capabilities. Analytical mindset with attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication skills for presenting financial data to diverse audiences. Propensity to use AI and other software tools to enhance productivity and effectiveness.
