JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Financial Aid Counselor supports the day-to-day operations of the Office of Financial Aid by providing coordination of communication and customer service efforts in the delivery of financial aid related information to prospective and current students, leading outreach and providing excellent customer service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
: Counsels prospective and enrolled students on all aspects of financial aid, and able to advise on financial management and budgeting practices as appropriate. Disseminates information to students, parents, and other constituents regarding Financial Aid programs, including loan, scholarship, and grant programs, in compliance with federal, state, and/or University requirements while providing excellent customer service. Resolves issues related to awarding and disbursement of financial aid. Assists in troubleshooting problems with reports of failed notifications and develop plans to resolve issues. Maintains communication with colleges as it relates to the awarding of their college endowed scholarship awards. Provides financial aid presentations at orientation and other events as necessary. Provides mandatory one-on-one counseling sessions to all newly enrolled first year students at UTHSC. Provides guidance on financial aid policies and procedures in accordance with College of Medicine associations (LCME & AAMC). Ensures that FWS awards are appropriately disbursed and credited to student’s accounts, auditing of Supervisor files and timely notifications to Supervisors on student’s continued FWS eligibility. Works to ensure the appropriate awarding of Federal Work Schedule as well as the proper reconciliation of the Federal Work Schedule Program. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree
EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of higher education experience (preferably in financial aid)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Excellent communication skills with specific ability to interact with students, staff and other departments/colleges on and off campus. Computer literacy skills, including knowledge of software for loan packaging. Knowledge of federal and state programs and of the rules related to administering programs. Excellent customer service skills ensuring to meet student needs in a timely and efficient manner. Ability to work independently and assess complex requests within documented guidelines.
