Monday•Friday 06/06/2025 Job Description Overview The National Retail Underwriting Manager is responsible for managing and supporting the underwriting function in alignment with department policies, practices and standards. As the National Retail Underwriting Manager, you will manage two direct reports and a complete underwriting staff of approximately 10 underwriters.
The Underwriting Manager will:
Ensure underwriting quality meets company and investor standards Carry out personnel management including hiring, counseling, training Continuously evaluate processes to ensure application of best practices and maximize staff utilization Provide support to production staff regarding underwriting and credit policy matters Complete second reviews of loan files and resolves exception cases Perform other related duties as required and assigned Demonstrate behaviors which are aligned with the organization’s desired culture and values Incorporate progressive automation related to Income, Asset and Credit assessment This is a remote role that may only be hired in the following location(s): South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia Responsibilities Pipeline Management•Oversees the mortgage pipeline to ensure service levels are met or exceeded. Provides feedback and guidance on complex mortgage matters. Collaborates with others to ensure regulatory requirements are met. Reviews investor-required documentation in mortgage loans and monthly reporting. Ensures associates meet or exceed service levels, quality standards, compliance, and customer expectations. Policy Resources•Assists with development of mortgage operations policies and procedures that ensure efficiency and minimize errors. Remains current on industry regulations and informs associates, peers, and senior management of relevant policy changes. Provides guidance and serves as an escalation point for highly complex underwriting credit decisions. Responsible for approving portfolio mortgage loans. Reviews denial requests and determines if alternate product may be available. Decides on the creditworthiness of complex loans. Managerial Functions•Leads work efforts for accuracy, process improvements and efficiencies. Coaches, develops, and delegates assignments to front line sales support, processing supervisors and closing manager and purchasers and shippers. Leads recruiting, hiring, training, performance, and development of assigned staff. Fosters diversity, inclusion, and related talent development objectives. Business Strategy•Maintains a current and extensive knowledge of trends, policies, and regulations related to retail credit and loan underwriting. Ensures associate team is kept up-to-date on developments that impact the area of work. Develops and achieves team goals to generate high-quality earning assets.
Qualifications Required experience:
Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years of experience in Mortgage process and underwriting AND 4 years Management experience OR High School Diploma or GED and 12 years of experience in Mortgage process and underwriting 4 years Management experience Preferred experience: Experience leading a team of mortgage underwriters Current and extensive knowledge of FNMA/FHLMC, FHA, USDA, VA, Construction, and Portfolio Lending Experience in CRA lending, including BMR and DPA Programs Experience analyzing complex financial statements A thorough understanding of cash flow methodology for complex tax returns including, but not limited to, partnerships, corporations, S-corporations, treatment of capital gains and trust income Highly proficient in Encompass, Excel and Word A history of building efficient processes and procedures related to underwriting
