The Claims Representative-Property is responsible for managing, investigating, and adjusting claims in accordance with applicable regulations established by the New York State Unfair Claims Practice Act, the Pennsylvania Unfair Claims Settlement Practices Act, other state and statutory guidelines, and any and all procedures adopted by the Company in accordance with various policy provisions. Become familiar with and interpret policy coverages, investigate claims, negotiate settlements, and manage litigation where necessary.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Review all claims assigned and determine if coverage for stated damage exists within the policy. Determine appropriate approach necessary to investigate the property claim. A strong knowledge base of all applicable forms, and how they interact is essential. Provide accurate and complete coverage interpretations for both claims staff as well as underwriting and agency personnel as needed. Review coverage questions and decisions made by others for quality and accuracy. Write and review claim letters and denials involving losses with no or partial coverage for accuracy, grammar, and presentation. Ability to understand and manage all functions of the claims process including payments, SOPs, reports to Leadership and other internal reporting processes. Initiate contact with insured, inform insured of the claims process and obtain any additional information necessary to proceed with processing the property claim. Prepare and send requests for appropriate records. Record data in individual property claim files. If necessary, arrange site inspection, obtain photos, conduct any interviews necessary of insured, witnesses and attorneys. When necessary, conduct internet searches, obtain information and analyze same. Maintain an appropriate and timely dialogue with individuals involved in the property claim. Secure experts when necessary (Forensic Engineers, Independent Adjusters, Physicians, etc.) and monitor file for reports obtained. Prepare and forward materials as required. Conduct file reviews with the Claims Manager, Attorneys, Underwriters, and other Management. Provide Underwriting with risk reports when appropriate. Submit necessary information to ISO. Provide support to other co-workers as needed. Attend scheduled appointments that may require travel. Attend educational programs and company sponsored events. Lead special projects and/or assignment designated by the Claims Manager or Management. Have an understanding of our reinsurance program and its reporting. Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications:
High school diploma required. Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred. Must possess current knowledge of medical and legal terminology as well as an awareness of legal procedures. Basic knowledge of the insurance industry. Insurance designation such as INS, AIC or CPCU either completed or in process preferred. Able to work independently or with minimal supervision. Advanced knowledge of property insurance. Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, including negotiation. Must be able to interact with multiple personality types. Possess high level of reading comprehension skills. Must be organized, detail oriented and able to meet deadlines. Ability to provide guidance to others regarding the entire claims process.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
