- We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Underwriter to manage a complex portfolio of group and/or individual business.
This role is responsible for the end-to-end underwriting process, including risk evaluation, pricing, and portfolio management, with a focus on achieving and exceeding business segment goals related to membership growth, revenue, and persistency. The Senior Underwriter will oversee an assigned block of business and/or a caseload of individual applications, ensuring that underwriting decisions align with company guidelines, regulatory requirements, and market competitiveness. This position also serves as a key consultative resource, providing expert guidance and support to internal stakeholders such as Sales, Product, and Actuarial teams, as well as to external partners and clients. Success in this role requires a deep understanding of underwriting principles, strong analytical and decision-making skills, and the ability to build collaborative relationships across departments to drive business outcomes.
- What You’ll Do
- Common to Group and Individual Business Segments
- + Has the authority to make “out-of-the-box” creative decisions within the broad bounds of authority stipulated by the Corporation.
+ Develops and provides training to the underwriting staff, sales staff, and other departments in the principles and practices of underwriting and rating. + Initiates underwriting process and system changes resulting in enhanced productivity. + Participates in the Underwriting Department’s strategic and tactical planning. + Develops and produces regular and ad hoc reports for internal management. + Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Department regarding their Business Segment and Corporate Projects. + Represents Department in regard to NC DOI inquiries and audits, internal or external.

- + Analyzes underwriting risk and determines premium rates for fully insured contracts and recommends funding rates for Administrative Services Only (ASO) contracts.
+ Proactively utilizes technical expertise to make recommendations regarding benefit plan design, stop loss levels, network feasibility and funding options to internal and external customers. + Participates in final rate negotiations and presentations with our largest most complex clients. + Manages Books of Business representing up to $300,000,000 in premium or premium equivalent. + Analyzes underwriting and medical risk to determine premium rates for fully insured small group contracts based upon medical conditions.
- Individual
- + Analyzes underwriting and medical risk to determine premium rates for fully insured Individual contracts based upon an applicant’s individual medical conditions. + Makes final decisions on rate appeals or appeals related to applications that have been declined. + Responsible for processing applications on a timely basis.
- What You Bring
- + Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree (where required) + 5+ years of experience in related field. + In lieu of degree, 7+ years of experience in related field.

- Salary Range
- At Blue Cross NC, we take great pride in a fair and equitable compensation package that reflects market-price and our starting salaries are typically planned near the middle of the range listed.
Compensation decisions are driven by factors including experience and training, specialized skill sets, licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. Our base salary is part of a robust Total Rewards package that includes an Annual Incentive Bonus
