Duties Description:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Analyze and evaluate applications for workers’ compensation insurance policies
- Services policies with large premiums and resolves underwriting issues that are potentially difficult, sensitive, or costly to NYSIF
- Determine if the policy is properly underwritten
- Analyze previous loss and premium data
- Experience rating data and claims material to price coverage
- Define, restrict, or qualify policy coverage
- Review audits and renewals
- Represent NYSIF at Hearings before the Workers’ Compensation Board and testifies in depositions and trials as an expert witness
- Correspond frequently with policyholders or their representatives, brokers, and NYSIF departments concerning other payroll and premiums, coverage, classifications, experience rating, certificate of insurance, endorsements, laws, rules, and procedures
- Other related duties and responsibilities as necessary as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
For Appointment to Underwriter 1:
- Reachable on current Civil Service eligible list for this title; OR
- One year of permanent, competitive class service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Eligible titles include, but are not limited to: Administrative Specialist 1, Investigator 2 (Compensation Claims), Policyholder Services Representative 1, Claims Service Representative 1, Claims Services Representative 1 (Disability Benefits).
- A bachelor’s or higher degree AND two years of professional insurance industry experience in workers compensation insurance.
For Appointment to Underwriter Trainee 1:
- Reachable on current Civil Service eligible list for this title; OR
- One year of permanent, competitive class service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Eligible titles include, but are not limited to: Investigator 1, Assistant Insurance Fund Services Representative, Program Aide.
- A bachelor’s or higher degree (in any area of study).
