Accountable for assisting patients with regards to applying for financial assistance, or other resources identified revealing the ability to pay out of pocket for MUSC Health services. Informing patients of copayments, deductibles, and/or deposits that need to be paid prior to services being rendered. Informing families of financial assistance decisions, when needed instruct families to follow up with Billing Office.

Job Summary/Purpose:

The Financial Services Representative is responsible for providing onsite financial counseling for the patients and families. Facilitates and authorizes the MUSC Hospital Financial Assistance Policy. Accountable for assisting patients with regards to applying for financial assistance, or other resources identified revealing the ability to pay out of pocket for MUSC Health services. Informing patients of copayments, deductibles, and/or deposits that need to be paid prior to services being rendered. Informing families of financial assistance decisions, when needed instruct families to follow up with Billing Office.

Required Minimum Training and Education:

High school diploma with two (2) years customer service/collections experience, or bachelor’s degree and one year customer service/collections experience. Knowledge of medical terminology, and knowledge/understanding of health insurance preferred. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, with knowledge of Epic preferred. Must be punctual and dependable, and have excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. Exhibit good organizational skills, strong initiative to be goal oriented. Establish and maintain effective relationships with necessary contacts. Must have a sense of professionalism and continuously seeks self-improvement.

Degree of Supervision:

Work independently with minimum supervision; Excellent interpersonal, written and oral skills are required; Ability to analyze, determine necessary steps to provide expected outcome and follow through with actions.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Function as an integral member of the health care team to reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm and mutual respect.
Collect, copy, fax, or email, and sort all information related to the enrollment process (birth certificates, social security cards, wages, workman’s compensation, unemployment, auto insurance, health insurance, IEP, letter of medical necessity, w2, income tax returns, court documents, letters of financial support, visas, green cards, immigration documents, etc.
Perform assessment and verification of documents with necessary parties and communicates information to necessary parties.
Performs follow up and communicates with patient(s) as needed.
To work accounts assigned to patient work queues in Epic meeting departmental established expected metrics.
Compliant with all MUSC Health Policies and Procedures.
Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 lbs (+•) unassisted. Lift from 36″ to overhead 15 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
