The purpose for this post is that, since I’ve been here, I’ve noticed how the amount of rental properties owned by corporations has skyrocketed. In addition, rent has skyrocketed as well. This has also resulted in the inability of regular people to purchase property, I hear these corporations have the advantage in bidding wars. The result has been exorbitantly-priced rental property in Charlotte, along with unreasonable requirements that must be met in order to qualify (3x the rental amount). If the properties were priced reasonably, this wouldn’t be an issue. The average 3br/2ba property is priced at around $2k per month, which means one’s salary must be at least $6k per month. This translates to $72k per year. The average salary here is $68,800. The 25th percentile salary is $49,647, while the 75th percentile is $88,114. This indicates a wide range of salaries in the city. Most young people starting out on their own will not make $72k a year, let alone factoring in the cost of childcare, car note, etc. God forbid, you suffer an illness or a job loss, it would be literally catastrophic. As a child, I’ve experienced homelessness, so I know how easily one can find themselves in this predicament. I see tent communities cropping up everywhere. I’ve started a podcast called Unhoused in CLT and I want to tell the stories of people who are struggling with homelessness. My purpose is to show how easily this can be you, or me, or someone you love. Hopefully it will get enough attention to make changes in Charlotte so this trend no longer continues.
