Clerk to the Assessor Town of Macedon 32 W Main St, Macedon, NY 14502 GENERAL
STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists the Assessor in all functions of Real Property Assessment Administration according to New York State Real Property Tax Law and local laws. Performs any related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This position is moderately difficult work involving the processing of real property data, real estate transfers, exemption administration, and complaint negotiations. The work requires a basic understanding of specific tax assessment procedures and terminology. The position involves daily direct interaction with the general public via phone and in person.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Performs work under general supervision using independent judgment and experience making decisions according to established policies and procedures in compliance with set deadlines.
- Operates personal computer and its peripherals in a network environment.
- Answers telephone in a timely and courteous manner, responding to routine questions and taking detailed messages.
- Greets and meets directly with public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Compiles and sorts monthly reports on sales of property.
- Maintains up to date inventory records.
- Maintain property folders and contents in accordance with ORPTS Rules and Regulations and State Records Retention Rules.
- Pulls material from files, makes simple file searches, and returns information to correct location.
- Collects and compiles statistical data and other related information.
- Data entry of assessment related information: property inventory, exemptions, sales, names and address changes, bank codes, building permits etc.
- Maintains property files with up-to-date building permit, inventory, correspondences etc.
- Distributes and receives applications for various exemption programs, assessment complaints etc.
- Does related work as required by the Assessor.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of standard office equipment and software packages (Windows, MS Office, and Outlook). Capable of learning specialized assessment software; ability to learn assessment terminology and explain basic concepts of the assessment process to the public and related agencies; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Clerical aptitude, strong attention to detail, good judgment, and confidentiality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
Three years clerical experience, or one year of clerical experience in work involving real property assessment records or real estate valuation.
