About the Role Experienced Tax Associates demonstrate advanced expertise in preparing business and individual tax returns, including complex calculations and research, while also beginning to prepare higher-level returns and work papers. An Associate independently handles problems, interacts with clients and taxing authorities, and actively participates in professional development activities and firm programs, taking on larger projects and demonstrating leadership potential. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Prepare moderate business and individual tax returns and workpapers with minimal assistance. Begin to prepare complex business and individual tax returns and workpapers. Prepare complex estimate and extension calculations, including tax liability projections. Obtain exposure to preparing deferred tax liabilities calculations to assist the assurance team, as needed. Partner with tax team members on special projects and advisory services. Demonstrate advanced level accounting skills in business and individual tax return preparation. Begin interacting with clients, as needed, to support tax team members while meeting the needs of the client. Interface with taxing authorities and assist in gathering information for federal, state, and local tax audits, as needed. Independently identify problem areas, research technical issues, draw conclusions, and document in written technical format. Demonstrate a more complex knowledge of clients’ businesses and industries and how tax law applies to their business. Demonstrate advanced understanding of state concepts of apportionment and nexus. Continue to increase knowledge surrounding the relevant rules, regulations, and laws that govern tax at a federal, state, and local level. Demonstrate proficiency in answering tax compliance questions by utilizing tax research tools. Work on multiple projects simultaneously, with minimal direction. Meet productivity goals. Meet internal and client deadlines. Consider your future goals and aspirations, including interest in leadership, utilizing the Dean Dorton career path. Utilize leveraging models and guidelines to work with new Associates and Interns. Demonstrate analytical and reasoning skills. Take ownership of large projects and engagements and manage timelines to the end of the deliverable. Take initiative to request attendance in internal and/or external meetings. Work autonomously under pressure of deadlines and multiple priorities. Provide feedback to team members regarding quality of work. Request feedback and apply findings to client work and professional development. Take on challenging conversations with staff and leadership – share insights, opinions, and recommendations. Act quickly to take advantage of opportunities. Become recognized as a resource for projects and initiatives, both charge and non-charge. Work toward completion of the CPA exam, if applicable. Participate in firm-sponsored events and activities. Fully participate in Associate Program, if applicable, including: Attending networking activities and opportunities. Actively participate in all required program training (both technical, professional, and leadership development), asking questions and offering insight. Experience & Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required in accounting, finance, business, or related field. One to four years of experience in a tax or tax-related technical role.
