Job Description

Assistant Treasurer/Collector Town of Mendon 20 Main Street, Mendon, MA 01756 Position is responsible for performing technical and clerical work to assist the Treasurer/Collector with work involving the receipt of money and the collection of all taxes due to the Town, ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS
  • Assists the Treasurer/Collector with the collection of all town receivables including, but not limited to, taxes, betterments, liens, and other municipal fees, interest and charges; under the supervision of the Treasurer/Collector, interprets and enforces the law regarding delinquent accounts, and initiates collection action on overdue accounts.
  • Issues tax bills and demand notices relating to real estate, personal property, excise (motor vehicle), water, and farm animal taxes.
  • Receives and accounts for funds received by the office; processes tax and water bill payments; calculates interest and charges on overdue bills; performs research as required to resolve problems; updates records, as needed.
  • Maintains records of cash receipts; enters all information related to receivables into the financial system; completes bank deposit slips and makes bank deposits; tracks payments made to Collector’s bank account and wires transfers to Treasurer’s account; prepares activity reports for Town Accountant.
  • Updates abatement accounts in computer, based on information provided by the Assessor; provides Assessor with address corrections and changes to ensure accurate records; generates refund payments due to abatements and transmits to taxpayer; balances abatements accounts with Assessors and Town Accountant.
  • Assists Treasurer with reconciliation of accounts with Town Accountant regarding all collections of taxes and fees during each fiscal year; prepares Treasurer/Collector’s annual report for Town Report.
  • Assists Treasurer/Collector with tax lien and tax title procedures, including tax title releases and preparation of foreclosure forms.
  • Answers questions and requests for information from taxpayers, government officials, bank officers and others, on an as-needed basis. Responds to questions regarding departmental operations, policies, and programs.
  • Acts as Treasurer/Collector in his or her absence; may be responsible for production of payroll and expense checks and management of treasury funds to ensure adequate cash balance to cover payables.
  • Processes departmental payroll and processes payments for departmental expenses.
  • Maintains and improves upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.
  • Performs similar or related work as directed, required, or as situation dictates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Associates degree or equivalent with coursework in accounting, finance, business, or similar area of study and three to five years of experience in accounting or a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Payroll experience is advantageous.

Special Requirements:

Ability to become bonded. It is expected that the Asst. Treasurer/Collector will pursue professional certification.

$27.31 – $28.99 per hour Expected hours: 30 – 35 per week
